Repatriation from Cyprus to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Cyprus to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish consul confirmed in your case. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Cyprus are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Cyprus
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Cyprus always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Cyprus are authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it (the country is a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Cyprus: a Cypriot firm and a Polish funeral home work together
On Cyprus, consular matters are handled by the Polish Embassy in Nicosia, at Kennedy Avenue 12-14. According to its instructions, a Cypriot funeral firm takes care of the formalities on the Cypriot side and usually works with a Polish funeral home. Cremation is practically unavailable on Cyprus, so we plan it in advance. If the consul refuses, he issues a decision, against which a complaint can be lodged with the Minister of Foreign Affairs within 7 days, through the consul. The certificate is collected in person or sent by post.
The Cypriot customs service allows bodies to be exported by air on the basis of an airway bill and a death certificate authenticated by the health services. The transport is accompanied by the original death certificate issued by a doctor and, after an autopsy, a document on the cause of death and the removal permit. Death certificates are issued by the Civil Registry and Migration Department or the district administrations; documents are in Greek and English. We handle the rest for the family.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the Polish consul with territorial competence for this country. We confirm the mission in your case.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
