Procedure: Vatican City

Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Vatican City always requires the Polish consul's certificate.

Documents from Vatican City are authenticated by legalisation if a Polish office asks for it (the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).

Vatican City: the case is handled by the embassy to the Holy See

The Polish post for the Vatican is the Polish Embassy to the Holy See. Its page describes the certificate for bringing in remains or ashes: the application is submitted in person or by post, and the documents are the starosta's permit and a document confirming the death. The consul informs about further papers required by the local authorities.

We agree the details for arranging the appointment and the documents directly with the embassy before sending anything. Until then we establish which funeral home and which local services will prepare the remains. We organise the whole process and keep the order of steps. At the end we take care of the carriage to Poland, contact with the cemetery and the date of the funeral, so that the family decides only on what matters most to it. We clarify the detailed requirements of this country's authorities on request in your case.

The Polish consul's certificate

The certificate is issued by the consul of the mission named on gov.pl: the Polish Embassy to the Holy See.

How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
