Repatriation from Solomon Islands to Moldova
Honiara is very far from Chișinău, and the only practical guidance we found comes from a foreign government, not from the Solomon Islands. We go through the steps we can confirm and say openly what we still have to establish.
- Issuing authority and document
- Solomon Islands is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973; list on treatydatabase.overheid.nl, consulted 13.10.2026), so local rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the UK government guidance (published 11.07.2025), the death is registered with the Registrar General Office in Honiara, and a funeral director can usually do it. The guidance does not say which Solomon Islands authority permits remains to leave the country (the permission it mentions is issued by a coroner in England or Wales), so we name none. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted 13.10.2026; the page shows no date) has no mission in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji or elsewhere in the Pacific and does not name Solomon Islands among the countries served by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
- Transport
- Honiara is about 13,800 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation from approximate city coordinates). The destinations list of Chișinău airport (Wikipedia, consulted 13.10.2026) has no flight to Oceania. The article on Honiara airport (same source, same date) lists Port Moresby, Brisbane and Port Vila and no European destination, so the journey has at least one connection. Which airlines accept remains on which route we have not verified, and we look at it with the family once the documents are known.
- Timing
- The UK guidance says the death certificate takes "a few days up to a few weeks", that availability and fees for a cremation are to be discussed with Honiara City Council 24 hours in advance and that organising one "can take some time". These are the only timings we found, and they cover registration and cremation, not the whole journey. We promise no total timeline and confirm it once we have the documents.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
According to the UK guidance (11.07.2025), the registration needs the person's birth certificate, an official ID such as a passport, spouse, marriage and divorce details where relevant, and one or more of: the hospital's Death Notification Form, a church burial notification, or statutory declarations by parents, guardians or close relatives made before a magistrate or a Commissioner for Oaths. If the person died in hospital, the attending doctor may issue a medical certificate of death.
The guidance advises asking for extra copies of the death certificate. A post-mortem may take place in some circumstances; according to the guidance, the report is not usually given to the next of kin.
Required documents
The guidance does not list the documents for taking remains out of Solomon Islands, and it says nothing about embalming or coffin requirements, so we do not present a Solomon Islands list as fact; we establish it at the start. According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (consulted 13.10.2026), the mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the country where the death occurred.
Solomon Islands does not appear in the HCCH table of parties to the Apostille Convention (table updated 30.06.2026), and it is not in the apostille list on mfa.gov.md (list dated 02.02.2017); for countries outside that list the page says documents are recognised only after consular legalisation. Which Moldovan mission would carry that out, and in what order, we confirm before sending documents.
Specifics of Solomon Islands
The guidance says no funeral directors are known outside Honiara and that bringing a body from elsewhere costs extra. Cremation is uncommon and, in the guidance's words, there is "no guarantee of receiving ashes"; the Honiara City Council confirms availability and fees, and the fee must be paid before the cremation.
Burial in the Honiara cemetery needs the written permission of the city clerk. If the family chooses to carry ashes, the guidance mentions the death certificate and the cremation certificate and advises telling the airline in advance; sending ashes by post or courier may not be possible.
Frequently asked questions
Where is a death registered in Solomon Islands?
With the Registrar General Office in Honiara, according to the UK guidance of 11.07.2025. A funeral director can usually do this on the family's behalf.
Does the Solomon Islands death certificate state the cause of death?
According to the same guidance, the certificate is issued in English and does not state the cause of death. If the person died in hospital, the doctor may issue a separate medical certificate.
What if the death happened outside Honiara?
The guidance says there are no known funeral directors outside Honiara and that transport from elsewhere costs extra. We look at the specific place and the route with the family.
Is the Hague apostille used for documents from Solomon Islands?
We did not find the country among the parties in the HCCH table (updated 30.06.2026) or in the mfa.gov.md list. For such countries the Moldovan ministry's page speaks of consular legalisation, and we confirm the details with the competent mission.
