Repatriation from Nauru to Moldova

Nauru is an island state in the Pacific, and its airport is served, according to the sources we read, by a single airline. That decides much of the route, and we found few official sources on the local procedure.

Issuing authority and document
Nauru is not on the list of states under the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973; list on treatydatabase.overheid.nl, consulted 13.10.2026), so local rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to getinthepicture.org (article of 29.01.2018 and country page, consulted 13.10.2026), the 1957 law was replaced by a new one in force from February 2018; the civil registration authority is the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, and for a death in Nauru's hospital the Director of Medical Services notifies the registrar immediately. The family must still register the death with the registrar; we found no deadline for deaths. Who permits remains to leave the country we did not find, and we name no authority. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted 13.10.2026; the page shows no date) has no embassy in Nauru and does not name the country among those covered by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
Transport
Yaren, Nauru, is about 13,450 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation from approximate coordinates of the settlement). The destinations list of Chișinău airport (RMO) on Wikipedia, read on 13.10.2026, has no destination in Oceania. According to Wikipedia (consulted 13.10.2026), Nauru Airlines is the only airline at Nauru's airport; its own page (13.10.2026) names Brisbane, Kiritimati, Majuro, Nadi, Pohnpei and Tarawa. There are no direct flights to Europe, so the journey involves at least one connection. We found no published airline policy on carrying remains.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. In Nauru the airport matters: the Nauru Airlines page (13.10.2026) says runway works have been delayed, pending rescheduling in early 2027, that services to and from Nauru may be subject to modification and that timetables are a guide only. So we promise no departure date and confirm one only when a booking is in hand.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

According to getinthepicture.org (29.01.2018), if a person dies in Nauru's hospital, the Director of Medical Services notifies the registrar immediately after the death. The country page (consulted 13.10.2026) adds that families must still formally register the death through the registrar's office, and it gives no deadline for deaths.

The text of the law (Births Deaths and Marriages Registration Act, 2017) is published on PacLII, but the page did not open when we checked, so we quote no sections or deadlines from it. If the death happened outside the hospital, who reports it and within what time we did not establish.

Required documents

We found no official list of documents for taking remains out of Nauru, so we do not present one as fact. According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (consulted 13.10.2026), the mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the country where the death occurred.

Nauru does not appear in the Hague Apostille Convention status table (HCCH, updated 30.06.2026). The legalisation page of the Moldovan ministry (list dated 02.02.2017) says documents from countries outside the list are recognised only after consular legalisation. So for Nauru we expect legalisation rather than an apostille; the steps and the mission that does it we confirm before sending documents.

Specifics of Nauru

Nauru's air links rest on one airline, with connections to Brisbane, Nadi, Tarawa, Majuro and Pohnpei (Nauru Airlines page, 13.10.2026). The same page says it also operates Tarawa–Kiritimati flights for Air Kiribati. If a route does not operate on the day needed, there is no backup operator that we have verified.

On cremation in Nauru, embalming and coffin requirements for a flight we found no official sources, and the page states nothing from them. Requirements for a coffin or an urn we clarify at the start with the Moldovan mission and the airline.

Frequently asked questions

Who reports a death in Nauru's hospital?

According to getinthepicture.org (29.01.2018), the Director of Medical Services notifies the registrar immediately after the death. The family then registers the death at the registrar's office.

The runway in Nauru is under works: does it affect us?

The Nauru Airlines page (13.10.2026) says runway works are delayed pending rescheduling in early 2027 and that flights may be modified. So we confirm a flight only once a booking exists.

Will the death certificate carry an apostille?

We do not expect one: Nauru is not in the HCCH status table (30.06.2026). The Moldovan ministry page says documents from countries outside its list are recognised after consular legalisation; we confirm the procedure with the competent mission.

Is there a legal deadline for registering a death in Nauru?

We did not find one. The sources we read name only the immediate notification from the hospital; we state no other deadline.
