Repatriation from Kiribati to Moldova

Kiribati is a nation of atolls in the middle of the Pacific, more than 13,000 km from Chișinău. We found few official sources on the local procedure, and we say openly what we know and what we establish at the start.

Issuing authority and document
Kiribati is not on the list of states under the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973; list on treatydatabase.overheid.nl, consulted 13.10.2026), so local rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the getinthepicture.org country page (consulted 13.10.2026; undated), the main civil registration authority is the Civil Registry Office under the Ministry of Women, Youth and Social Affairs, and on remote islands island council clerks and church representatives help collect the information. We found no official document saying who permits remains to leave the country, so we name no authority. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted 13.10.2026; the page shows no date) has no embassy in Kiribati and does not name the country among those covered by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
Transport
Tarawa is about 13,600 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation from approximate coordinates of the town). The destinations list of Chișinău airport (RMO) on Wikipedia, read on 13.10.2026, has no destination in Oceania. Bonriki airport on Tarawa, according to Wikipedia (consulted 13.10.2026), has Fiji Airways flights to Nadi and Nauru Airlines flights to Brisbane, Majuro, Pohnpei, Nauru and other Pacific points, and no direct flights to Europe. So the journey involves at least one connection; which airlines accept remains on these routes we have not verified.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. Two things matter here: flights from Tarawa are few and link small islands, and death registration is not complete everywhere (67.8% of deaths registered within a year, according to the 2025 progress report cited by getinthepicture.org), so at the start we check that a death certificate exists. If the death happened on a remote island, a local leg is added whose duration we do not know.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

According to the getinthepicture.org page (consulted 13.10.2026), the Civil Registry Office is in charge of registration, and the Ministry of Health (Health Information Unit), the Ministry of Justice and the National Statistics Office play roles in the system. The page does not describe the steps of registering a death, the deadlines or the fees, and it names the lack of a proper legal framework as a challenge without citing a law. So we state no deadline or form and establish them at the start.

On islands outside Tarawa the information on a death is collected by island council clerks, assistant clerks and church representatives; the introduction of the OpenCRVS system is planned for 2026 (getinthepicture.org, 30.04.2026). Who reports the death and where the certificate is collected therefore depends on the island; we ask the family where the death occurred.

Required documents

We found no official list of documents for taking remains out of Kiribati, so we do not present one as fact. According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (consulted 13.10.2026), the mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the country where the death occurred.

Kiribati does not appear in the Hague Apostille Convention status table (HCCH, updated 30.06.2026). The legalisation page of the Moldovan ministry (list dated 02.02.2017) says documents from countries outside the list are recognised only after consular legalisation. So for Kiribati we expect legalisation rather than an apostille; the order of steps and the mission that does it we confirm before sending documents.

Specifics of Kiribati

According to Wikipedia (consulted 13.10.2026), Air Kiribati and Coral Sun Airways serve the other 16 airports of the Gilbert Islands, and the Nauru Airlines page (13.10.2026) lists a Tarawa–Kiritimati service operated on behalf of Air Kiribati. We have not checked whether these flights accept coffins or urns.

On cremation in Kiribati, embalming and air transport of a coffin we found no official sources, and the page states nothing from them. If the family prefers an urn, its requirements are also clarified at the start, with the Moldovan mission and the airline.

Frequently asked questions

Who registers a death in Kiribati?

According to getinthepicture.org (13.10.2026), the main authority is the Civil Registry Office; on remote islands island council clerks help. The exact steps are not described there, so we establish them at the start.

Will the death certificate carry an apostille?

We do not expect one: Kiribati is not in the HCCH status table (30.06.2026). The Moldovan ministry page says documents from countries outside its list are recognised after consular legalisation; we confirm the procedure with the competent mission.

Which Moldovan mission handles Kiribati?

The list on mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026) has no embassy in Kiribati and does not name the country among those covered by another mission. We do not invent a mission; we establish it before sending documents.

Why is there no timeline for Kiribati?

Flights are few, the journey involves at least one connection, and the local procedure is not described in any official source we found. We confirm the timeline once we see the documents.
