Repatriation from Tonga to Moldova

Tonga is very far from Moldova, and we found no official page on taking remains out of it. We show what the sources confirm about documents, legalisation and flights, and state what is still to be established.

Issuing authority and document
Tonga is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973; list on treatydatabase.overheid.nl, consulted 13.10.2026), so local rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. We found no official source naming the Tongan authority that permits remains to leave the country: the UK government has no Tonga page among its guides on dying abroad (checked 13.10.2026), and the only items we found were news reports about remains arriving in Tonga. We therefore name no authority. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted 13.10.2026; the page shows no date) has no mission in the Pacific and does not name Tonga among the countries served by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
Transport
Nuku'alofa is about 16,400 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation from approximate city coordinates), the longest distance among the five Pacific states in this group. The destinations of Chișinău airport (Wikipedia, consulted 13.10.2026) include nothing in Oceania. The article on Fuaʻamotu airport on Tongatapu (same source, same date) lists Auckland, Sydney and Nadi (Fiji Airways, with Suva by Fiji Link) and no European destination, so the journey has at least one connection. Which airlines accept remains we have not verified.
Timing
We found no official timing for registering a death or taking remains out of Tonga. We promise no timeline and confirm it once we have the documents and the route.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

We did not find an official Tongan page on registering the death of a foreign national, on the permit to take remains out or on embalming and coffin rules. The only items we found were press reports from 2020 about remains arriving in Tonga; in one of them (Kaniva News, 2020) the Ministry of Health said it would monitor the funeral. Those concern arrival, not departure, and we do not treat them as a procedure.

For that reason this page does not describe a Tongan sequence of steps. We establish the local procedure at the start through the Moldovan mission that proves competent and through the local funeral services on the spot, and we tell the family what is confirmed and what is not.

Required documents

We do not state a Tongan list of documents as fact. According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (consulted 13.10.2026), the mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the country of death.

Tonga is listed as a party to the Hague Apostille Convention in the HCCH table (updated 30.06.2026; the table also records a declaration by Tonga, which we have not read) and appears in the apostille list of mfa.gov.md (dated 02.02.2017). Which Tongan office issues the apostille we establish when we have the documents.

Specifics of Tonga

Tongatapu, the island with the international airport, is the practical gateway: the article on the airport lists Air New Zealand to Auckland, Qantas to Sydney and Fiji Airways to Nadi, plus domestic flights to the outer islands. If the death occurs on one of the outer islands, an extra domestic leg is likely, but we found no source on how remains are moved between the islands.

The airport article also notes that Virgin Australia's services from Sydney and Auckland ended in 2020. Schedules change, so we check the current flights, and the airline's acceptance of remains, shortly before the departure rather than rely on the list.

Frequently asked questions

Did you find an official Tongan procedure for taking remains out?

No (13.10.2026). We searched and found no official Tongan or UK government page on it, so the page does not describe one and we establish it at the start.

Which airport do flights leave from in Tonga?

The international airport is Fuaʻamotu (TBU) on Tongatapu. Per Wikipedia (13.10.2026), it has services to Auckland, Sydney and Nadi; other flights are domestic.

Do Tongan documents need an apostille for Moldova?

Tonga is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention and is in the mfa.gov.md apostille list. The Tongan office that issues it we establish together with the documents.

Which Moldovan embassy handles Tonga?

The mfa.gov.md list does not say. It shows no mission in the Pacific and does not name Tonga under another mission, so we confirm the competent mission before sending documents.
