Repatriation from Micronesia to Moldova
The Federated States of Micronesia consist of four states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. Civil registration is kept by state, so the first step is to find out in which state the death occurred. We found no official sources on taking remains out.
- Issuing authority and document
- Micronesia (Federated States) is not on the list of states under the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973; list on treatydatabase.overheid.nl, consulted 13.10.2026), so local rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the getinthepicture.org country page (consulted 13.10.2026), the Department of Health and Social Affairs coordinates the data and each state's supreme court is responsible for civil registration, including death registrations and certificates. Who permits remains to leave the country we did not find, and we name no authority. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted 13.10.2026; the page shows no date) has no embassy in Micronesia and does not name the country among those covered by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
- Transport
- Kolonia on Pohnpei is about 12,200 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation from approximate coordinates of the town). The destinations list of Chișinău airport (RMO) on Wikipedia, read on 13.10.2026, has no destination in Oceania. According to Wikipedia (consulted 13.10.2026), United Airlines links Pohnpei with Chuuk, Kosrae, Guam, Honolulu and Majuro, and Nauru Airlines flies to Pohnpei (also confirmed on its own page, 13.10.2026); the Pohnpei article is partly out of date. No direct flights to Europe appear, so the journey involves at least one connection.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. In Micronesia the state matters: getinthepicture.org puts death registration at about 80% in Pohnpei and about 70% in Yap (undated figures) and describes it as almost complete in Kosrae, so at the start we check that a death certificate exists. If the death happened in a state far from Pohnpei, a flight between states is added whose duration we do not know.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
According to getinthepicture.org (consulted 13.10.2026), in each of the four states the supreme court is responsible for civil registration and issues the certificates. The page does not describe the steps of registering a death, who reports it, the deadlines or the fees, so we state no form or deadline and establish them at the start of the case.
The same page gives a death registration rate of 100% for the whole country (2025 progress report), but the figures by state are lower, and it links the difference to distances and to coordination between agencies. So we do not rely on the national figure and check each case.
Required documents
We found no official list of documents for taking remains out of Micronesia, so we do not present one as fact. According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (consulted 13.10.2026), the mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the country where the death occurred.
Micronesia does not appear in the Hague Apostille Convention status table (HCCH, updated 30.06.2026). The legalisation page of the Moldovan ministry (list dated 02.02.2017) says documents from countries outside the list are recognised only after consular legalisation. So for Micronesia we expect legalisation rather than an apostille; the steps and the mission that does it we confirm before sending documents.
Specifics of Micronesia
Each state has its own institutions, which is why we do not describe a single procedure for the country. In our searches a 2020 notice of the Pohnpei State government on importing remains, from the COVID-19 period, came up; we could not open the page, so we do not use it.
On embalming, cremation and coffin requirements we found no official sources, and the page states nothing from them. We clarify them at the start with the Moldovan mission and the airline.
Frequently asked questions
Who registers a death in Micronesia?
According to getinthepicture.org (13.10.2026), the supreme court of the state where the death occurred (Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei or Kosrae). The steps are not described there, so we establish them at the start.
Why does the state of death matter?
Because registration is done by state, and the pages we read give different rates (about 80% in Pohnpei, 70% in Yap, almost complete in Kosrae; undated figures). For that reason we check case by case that the certificate exists.
Will the death certificate carry an apostille?
We do not expect one: Micronesia is not in the HCCH status table (30.06.2026). The Moldovan ministry page says documents from countries outside its list are recognised after consular legalisation; we confirm the procedure with the competent mission.
Which flights go to Pohnpei?
According to Wikipedia and the Nauru Airlines page (13.10.2026), United Airlines links Pohnpei with Guam, Honolulu, Majuro, Chuuk and Kosrae, and Nauru Airlines flies to Pohnpei. No direct flights to Europe appear; we check the timetable at planning.
