Repatriation from Tuvalu to Moldova

For Tuvalu we found no official guidance on a death of a foreign national or on taking remains out. We prefer to say that openly and give the page only the facts we could confirm: the legalisation rule, the flights from Funafuti and the missing Moldovan mission.

Issuing authority and document
Tuvalu is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973; list on treatydatabase.overheid.nl, consulted 13.10.2026), so local rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. We found no official source naming the Tuvaluan authority that registers a death or permits remains to leave the country: the UK government has no Tuvalu page among its guides on dying abroad (checked 13.10.2026). We therefore name no authority. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted 13.10.2026; the page shows no date) has no mission in the Pacific and does not name Tuvalu among the countries served by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
Transport
Funafuti is about 14,900 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation from approximate city coordinates). The destinations of Chișinău airport (Wikipedia, consulted 13.10.2026) include nothing in Oceania. The article on Funafuti airport (same source, same date) shows a single scheduled operator, Fiji Airways, flying to Suva three times a week and to Nadi twice a week, so every journey starts with a flight to Fiji and continues with at least one more connection. Schedules may change, and whether remains are accepted on these small aircraft we have not verified.
Timing
We found no official timing for anything in Tuvalu. What does follow from the flight list is that departures from Funafuti are few (five a week per the Wikipedia article of 13.10.2026), so the date of the first flight can matter more than the paperwork. We promise no timeline and confirm it once we have the documents and the flight.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

We did not find an official Tuvaluan page on registering the death of a foreign national, on the permit to take remains out or on embalming and coffin rules, and we found no guide by another government for Tuvalu. This page therefore does not describe a Tuvaluan sequence of steps.

We establish the procedure at the start: which local office registers the death, who permits the remains to leave and what the airline requires. We tell the family what is confirmed and what is not, and we do not present assumptions from neighbouring countries as Tuvaluan rules.

Required documents

We do not state a Tuvaluan list of documents as fact. According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (consulted 13.10.2026), the mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the country of death.

Tuvalu does not appear in the HCCH table of parties to the Apostille Convention (table updated 30.06.2026) or in the apostille list of mfa.gov.md (dated 02.02.2017). For countries outside that list the ministry's page says documents are recognised only after consular legalisation. Which Moldovan mission could carry it out, given that none is listed in the region, we establish before sending documents.

Specifics of Tuvalu

The airport article lists Fiji Airways flights with ATR 72-600 aircraft (up to 72 passengers): Suva on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, Nadi on Monday and Friday. Earlier services by other operators have ended. The practical consequence is a single exit route through Fiji, and the choice of the day depends on the flight, not on us.

Because there is almost no published guidance, the Fiji leg is where documents can be checked again: the Fiji High Commission publishes its own list of papers for remains moving through Fiji, which we check for the route when it applies. It is not a Tuvaluan rule and we do not present it as one.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official procedure for taking remains out of Tuvalu?

We found none (13.10.2026). The UK government has no Tuvalu page among its guides on dying abroad, and we found nothing else on the subject. We establish the procedure at the start.

Is the Hague apostille used for documents from Tuvalu?

Tuvalu is not in the HCCH table of parties (30.06.2026) or in the mfa.gov.md list. For such countries the ministry's page speaks of consular legalisation, and we confirm the competent mission before sending documents.

How many flights leave Funafuti?

According to Wikipedia (13.10.2026), Fiji Airways flies to Suva three times a week and to Nadi twice a week. The schedule may change, and we check it before planning the departure.

Does the Strasbourg Agreement help with Tuvalu?

No. Tuvalu is not among the 24 states on its list, so there is no simplified mortuary passport procedure between Tuvalu and Moldova under it.
