Repatriation from Fiji to Moldova
Fiji is one of the farthest points from Moldova. The local undertaker registers the death, and the body is prepared only after the coroner releases it. We take you through the steps and say openly where the available guidance is from 2023.
- Issuing authority and document
- Fiji is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973; list on treatydatabase.overheid.nl, consulted 13.10.2026), so local rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the UK government guidance (18.08.2023, so possibly out of date), local undertakers register the death with the relevant state authorities, and a Fijian death certificate accompanies the remains. The guidance does not say which authority permits the remains to leave the country, so we do not name one. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted 13.10.2026; the page shows no date) has no embassy in Fiji and does not name this country among those covered by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
- Transport
- Nadi is about 15,700 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation from the cities' coordinates). The destinations list of Chișinău airport (Wikipedia, consulted 13.10.2026) has no flights to Fiji. The article on Nadi airport (same source, consulted 13.10.2026) lists services to Australia, New Zealand, other Pacific islands, Hong Kong, San Francisco and Vancouver, and no direct destination in Europe. So the journey involves at least one long-haul connection, possibly more than one; we have not verified which airlines take remains on these routes, and we look at it with the family once the documents are known.
- Timing
- The 2023 guidance says the undertaker cannot begin preparing the body until the local coroner has released it, and that information about the circumstances of the death is usually released only after several months and in complex cases years. It gives no other timings. We promise no timeline and confirm it once we have the documents.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.

Procedure
According to the guidance, a relative or a formally appointed representative must instruct the funeral director, local or international, and the undertaker registers the death. If the deceased was insured, the insurer will normally appoint the funeral director. The guidance asks that copies of the international death certificate be requested when repatriation is discussed.
A post-mortem is, according to the guidance, normally performed in all cases, especially when the death is not natural, by forensic doctors or pathologists, and tissue or organ samples may be retained for testing. The next of kin can object or ask for an external-only or partial examination; the coroner considers cultural and religious sensitivities but in a homicide overrides such requests.
Required documents
The guidance does not list the documents for taking remains out of Fiji, so we do not state a Fijian list as fact; we establish it at the start. It says only that a Fijian death certificate accompanies the remains and links to justice.gov.fj for copies. According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (consulted 13.10.2026), the mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the country where the death occurred.
Fiji is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (succession 29.03.1971, in force 10.10.1970 as the HCCH table shows; HCCH table updated 30.06.2026), and the legalisation page of mfa.gov.md (dated 02.02.2017) lists it as a country whose documents are used with an apostille. The form and the order of steps for a mortuary file we confirm with the competent Moldovan mission before sending documents.
Specifics of Fiji
Embalming is optional, according to the guidance: it is more expensive and, after a sudden death, might hinder some of the autopsy results. For a journey of this length, whether the airline or Moldova requires it we check at the start.
Cremation is, according to the guidance, common practice in Fiji, and most crematoriums can host funeral services. Ashes can be carried personally after checking airline restrictions; unaccompanied ashes need a funeral director, because Fiji Post does not carry human remains. Councils may allow scattering in public areas, subject to local restrictions.
Frequently asked questions

Is embalming compulsory in Fiji?
No, according to the guidance it is optional, more expensive and after a sudden death might hinder some autopsy results. For Moldova and the airline we ask at the start whether it is needed.

The guidance says Fiji Post does not carry human remains. Ashes can be carried by the family after checking airline rules, or sent with a funeral director.
Are there direct flights from Fiji to Europe?
