Repatriation from Nauru to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Nauru to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish Consulate General in Sydney. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Nauru are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Nauru
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Nauru always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Nauru are authenticated by legalisation if a Polish office asks for it (the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Nauru: the district of the Consulate General in Sydney
Nauru, called Naoero in Polish, has no Polish post. According to the gov.pl page, the Consulate General of Poland in Sydney serves Australia excluding the Capital Territory, which is handled by the embassy in Canberra, as well as Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Nauru. For the family this means we send applications to Sydney, not to an embassy. The island has very few connections, so we plan the flight date right at the start.
It is one of the smallest states in the world, on a remote island, so remains or an urn travel by air, with connections agreed with the carrier. We usually proceed in this order: a death document from the local authorities or hospital, preparation of the body or cremation, consent for export, the flight, and on the Polish side the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate. We confirm the detailed requirements of this country's authorities on request, for your case.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the consul of the mission named on gov.pl: the Polish Consulate General in Sydney.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
