Summary. There is no way off the island without a flight. The coffin leaves from Larnaca or Paphos, usually for Poland, where our vehicle picks it up. The District Administration issues the death certificate in Greek, Turkish and English. Cypriot customs release the body on the air waybill and a certificate certified by the health services. We do the translations and the Embassy work at the same time.

What to do if someone has died in Cyprus
A death in Cyprus often happens at a resort or at work: in Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos or Ayia Napa. The papers are issued in Greek, and the reports of a Cypriot investigation are in Greek too, so it is hard for a family at home to follow. XREQUIEM, based in Drohobych, runs the case from the first call to the handover, and we answer day and night.
The first call
You tell us the town in Cyprus where the death happened and who has already come: a doctor or the police. That decides the papers and the departure airport, so we give you the amount to your town during the same call.
An autopsy, if the death was not natural
When a death is sudden or unnatural, the police open a case and an autopsy is carried out by state forensic pathologists. After the autopsy the police issue a permit to take the body abroad (Removal Order), and the death investigator issues a certificate of the causes of death. Then we collect the body.
We register the death
Under Cypriot practice, the death is registered at the District Administration Office of the district where the person died. A funeral director usually does this, not the family. We take this step on.
The death certificate
The District Administration issues it in Greek, Turkish and English. We take care of the Ukrainian translation and the certification.
The Ukrainian side
We take the translated Cypriot papers to the consular section of the Embassy of Ukraine in Nicosia. The consul registers the death of a Ukrainian citizen and certifies the documents the coffin needs at the border.
The body and the coffin
Before the flight the body is prepared for travel and placed in a hermetic coffin under seal. We settle embalming and its certificate with the airline before the flight is booked.
We take the deceased home
The flight from Cyprus lands at an airport in a country next to Ukraine. From there our vehicle drives the coffin to the town and the address you give us.

Documents needed to bring the deceased home from Cyprus
The Cypriot set of papers depends on two things: whether there was an autopsy and which part of the island the death happened in. Below is the list for the Republic of Cyprus. For your case we check it with the District Administration and customs.
What Cyprus issues
- Death certificate: issued by the District Administration Office of the district where the death occurred. It is in Greek, Turkish and English.
- Certification of the death certificate: for a body leaving by air, the certificate is certified by the Cypriot health services.
- Autopsy documents, if there was an autopsy: the death investigator's certificate of the causes of death and the police permit to take the body abroad.
- The carrier's documents: the air waybill for the coffin. Under Cypriot customs rules, a body leaves by air on the air waybill and the certified death certificate.
We go through these administrative steps on the family's behalf.
What we take on
- We register the death and obtain the certificate.
- We have the certificate certified by the health services.
- We book the air transport and obtain the air waybill.
- We have the Cypriot papers translated into Ukrainian and certified, then file them with the consular section in Nicosia.
- We write the statement for Ukrainian customs and attach the Cypriot and consular papers to it.
What we need from you
- The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
- Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
- A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to draw it up.
The list shared by all countries is on the Documents page. For the first hours after the news from Cyprus, see What to do if a loved one dies abroad.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Cyprus
The Embassy of Ukraine in Cyprus is in Nicosia and has a consular section. The Cypriot death certificate has no Ukrainian version, so for the consul it is translated into Ukrainian and certified.
- Ukrainian customs require a certificate of no prohibited items in the body and the coffin. In Cyprus a local authority issues it, and the consular section in Nicosia certifies it. Without it the coffin is turned back at the border.
- We check the consular registration procedure, the papers for the funeral allowance in Ukraine and any consular fee in Nicosia before filing. What is common to all countries is explained in the article below.
The family rarely needs to fly to Nicosia: we put the file together for the consular section and take it there. For the consul's other duties, see the article The Ukrainian consulate when someone dies abroad.
How we bring the deceased home from Cyprus
The sea lies between Cyprus and Ukraine, so the body leaves the island by air. There are no flights into Ukraine at the moment. We plan the route around your case.
Where we collect from
We collect the deceased from a hospital or morgue in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, Ayia Napa, Protaras or any other town or village in the Republic of Cyprus. There are two international airports: the main one in Larnaca and another in Paphos. Which one the flight leaves from depends on the city where the body is and on the flight. Name the city, and we will give you the route and the amount.
Plane plus vehicle
A flight from Larnaca or Paphos to an airport near the Ukrainian border, usually a Polish one. Our vehicle takes over the coffin there and continues by road.
How the coffin travels by air
The coffin flies in the hold of a passenger flight or on a cargo plane. Cypriot customs release it on the air waybill and the certified certificate, so we have these papers ready before booking and the coffin is not held up at an airport.
How long it takes
Once we have collected the body, the road takes from 24 hours. What comes before it usually takes longer: an autopsy if one is ordered, the certificate from the District Administration and a free place on a flight.
Only a hermetic metal coffin under official seal is accepted at the Ukrainian border, which is why our coffin has a zinc liner. We clear customs on a written statement with the documents from Cyprus attached. More on the Air transport page.
What to know about Cyprus
What works differently in Cyprus. We rely on the UK government guidance “Bereavement information for Cyprus” (12 January 2021), its separate guidance for the north of the island and the Cyprus customs page on taking human remains out of the country. The guidance is written for British families, so we check each point with the Cypriot authorities for your case.
- The cause of death on the certificate. The Cypriot certificate leaves the cause of death out. After an autopsy it appears in the death investigator's separate certificate. Tell us at once if the insurer or an estate needs it.
- Samples after an autopsy. Forensic doctors may keep tissue samples or organs without the family's consent, and the family is not told automatically. If this matters to you, tell us and we will raise it with the authorities.
- Copies of the certificate. Extra copies are issued by the District Administration only in person, not online or by phone, and you may be asked to prove the family relationship. So we get as many copies as you need straight away.
- Cremation. There is no crematorium in Cyprus yet. If the family wants a cremation, tell us at once and we will explain the options.
- The north of Cyprus. There the District Office issues the certificate in English and Turkish, and the south does not recognise northern documents. If the body goes out through the south, a second autopsy and a new Republic of Cyprus certificate are usually needed. The other way out is through Turkey. So tell us at once about a death in the north.
- Scattering ashes in Cyprus. This needs permission from the municipality where the family wants to do it.
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Cyprus in 2026?
This amount covers everything from the Cypriot morgue to your town, the flight too, and it is written into the contract. We take no prepayment. A funeral in Ukraine is not part of it and is priced separately.
What the price includes
The price includes:
- contact with hospital and morgue
- local, consular, border documents
- preparing the body for travel
- hermetically sealed coffin with a zinc liner for transport
- sealing as the border requires
- the flight from Cyprus to an airport near Ukraine and our vehicle from there to your town
- handover to the family
Coffin of your choice and urn: free of charge.
What can change the price
The final amount depends on the town in Cyprus and on whether the coffin flies from Larnaca or Paphos. The airline's fare on the date, an autopsy, embalming, the town in Ukraine and the insurer's share also count. We ask about these in the first call and give you the amount then. Prices for other countries are on the Prices page.

Questions about repatriation from Cyprus
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Cyprus?
From €2,800 for the whole way from Cyprus, the flight included. The breakdown is above, and the article How much it costs to bring a body home to Ukraine from abroad explains costs in general.
How long does repatriation from Cyprus take?
The road itself takes from 24 hours after we collect the body. In Cyprus the longest waits are for the District Administration certificate, the police permit after an autopsy if there was one, and a place on a flight from Larnaca or Paphos. We run all of this in parallel.
Is an autopsy compulsory?
Not always. It is carried out when a death is sudden or unnatural: the police then handle the case and state forensic pathologists perform the autopsy. Sometimes laboratory tests are awaited as well. We stay in touch with the authorities and will tell you when the body is released.
Who issues the death certificate in Cyprus?
The District Administration Office of the district where the death occurred. The certificate is in Greek, Turkish and English. For Ukraine it is translated into Ukrainian and certified.
Is embalming needed?
The airline sets the rules: some carriers take only an embalmed body on board. We check this for the specific flight from Cyprus and add the embalming certificate to the documents. More about preparing the body.
Which documents do you need from the family?
From you we need the deceased's passport or a photo of it, your passport, proof that you are related and a power of attorney for us. Everything else, from the District Administration to the Embassy in Nicosia, we do.
Do I have to fly to Cyprus?
As a rule, no. We deal with the District Administration, customs and the Embassy in Nicosia without you, and after each step we call or write on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram. If your signature is needed in person, we warn you ahead. More in the article If the family cannot travel abroad.
What kind of coffin is needed?
For the Ukrainian border the coffin must be metal, hermetic and sealed. What the airline asks for on the flight from Cyprus we find out before departure. The types of coffin are on the Coffins page.
Will insurance cover the transport?
Yes, when the policy covers transporting the body. Send us a photo of the policy, and we will check the terms and write to the insurer ourselves. Do not pay on your own before the insurer agrees, as the compensation may then be refused. More in the article Insurance and bringing a body home.
Can an urn with ashes be brought home from Cyprus?
Yes. Transporting an urn costs from €800. But there is no crematorium in Cyprus yet, so if the family is thinking about cremation, tell us at once and we will discuss how it can be done. For the Ukrainian border an urn needs the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items certified by the consulate. More on the Urn transport page.
