Repatriation of the deceased from Portugal to Ukraine
XREQUIEM collects the deceased from any town in Portugal and brings them to your town in Ukraine. We register the death, obtain the livre-trânsito from the police and prepare the Ukrainian papers, then travel by a connecting flight and by road. The price starts from €4,800. Expect the journey to take from 24 hours after collection.

Summary. From Portugal, we charge from €4,800 for papers, coffin and transport to your town; a funeral in Ukraine is booked separately. Few of our routes are longer, so we usually fly with a change of planes (the flight itself from 2.5 hours) and finish by road. By land the way leads through Spain, France, Germany and Poland. Portuguese law puts registration first: no livre-trânsito from the police until the death is on record. Allow 24 hours or more from collection to arrival. Give us the town and the address, and you will have the figure within 5 minutes.
Portuguese law allows neither burial nor sealing the coffin until the death is on record: there must be a death entry (assento) or a death bulletin (boletim de óbito). So registration comes first, and wherever we can we prepare the Ukrainian papers alongside it. XREQUIEM runs the case from your first call until the family receives the deceased. We speak Ukrainian, English, Polish and German.
We answer your call at any hour
We find out where the deceased is now: a hospital, a morgue or at home, and which papers you already hold. You hear the price during that same call.
We register the death
At the civil registry office (conservatória do registo civil). Outside its opening hours, at weekends and on public holidays, the death bulletin is issued by the police.
We obtain the death certificate
The carrier must have it with them the whole time the coffin is on the road.
We obtain the “body passport”
In Portuguese it is called livre-trânsito. It is issued by the police.
We prepare the Ukrainian side
We translate the Portuguese papers into Ukrainian, certify the translations, obtain the certificate of no prohibited items and file everything with the Embassy in Lisbon or the Consulate in Porto.
We prepare the deceased and the zinc-lined coffin
For the flight, the coffin is also placed in rigid packaging.
We bring the deceased home and hand them over to the family
We fly with a change of planes, and our vehicle drives from the airport near the border to your town.
There are only a few Portuguese documents, but the order matters: until the death is registered, the next papers will not be issued. Below is who issues what.
What Portugal issues
Assento de óbito: the death record, drawn up at the civil registry office (conservatória do registo civil). Outside the opening hours of the conservatória, at weekends and on public holidays, the police issue the death bulletin (boletim de óbito).
Certificado de óbito: the death certificate. The person transporting the coffin must carry it, or a copy of the death registration document.
Livre-trânsito: the “body passport” for taking the deceased out of Portugal. It is issued by the police: the GNR (National Republican Guard) or the PSP (Public Security Police).
What we take on
We register the death ourselves and obtain the livre-trânsito.
We have the Portuguese documents translated into Ukrainian and certified.
We file the papers with the Embassy in Lisbon or the Consulate in Porto for you.
We put together everything Ukrainian border customs will ask for.
What we need from you
The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
Your passport and a document proving that you are a relative.
A power of attorney in our name. If you are not in Portugal, we will tell you how to sign one where you are.
The Portuguese burial law refers directly to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses. That is why the livre-trânsito is the paper a coffin carries across European borders. Ukraine never signed the Agreement, so for our border we assemble a separate set. What it contains is listed on the Documents page.
The Embassy and consulate of Ukraine in Portugal
Ukraine has two missions in Portugal: the Embassy in Lisbon and the Consulate in Porto. We choose which one to approach according to where the death occurred.
Under Portuguese law, not only relatives but also the consul of the deceased's country may apply for burial or transport of a foreign national. The consul registers the death of a Ukrainian citizen once there is a medical document and a Portuguese death certificate with a certified Ukrainian translation.
The registration and the first certificate issued after it are free of consular charges.
Once the death is registered, the consul issues a certificate for social services, and with it the family applies for the funeral allowance in Ukraine.
The paper stating that the body and the coffin hold nothing forbidden comes from the Portuguese side and is then legalised by the consulate. The Ukrainian border will not let the coffin through without it.
For a Portuguese death certificate to be valid in Ukraine, it needs an apostille or legalisation. We sort this out before the coffin leaves. More on the What to do if a loved one dies abroad page.
How we bring the deceased home from Portugal
From Portugal to the Ukrainian border, the road crosses the whole of Europe. That is why, from Portugal, we more often choose a flight. We go by road all the way if the family decides so.
Where we collect from
We go to Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Coimbra, Setúbal, Braga or any other town or village. If the family cannot take charge of the body at once, the police move it to the morgue of the National Institute of Legal Medicine in Lisbon, Porto or Coimbra, or to the nearest morgue with a cold room. We collect from there as well. Name the town, and we will tell you the route and the amount.
Flight plus road
Most often we fly with a change of planes to Warsaw, Rzeszów or Chișinău and drive on from there. There are no direct flights to Ukraine to promise. Time in the air is from 2.5 hours.
By road
By road the route runs through Spain, France, Germany and Poland to the Ukrainian border. It is long, but possible if the family would rather have it that way.
How long it takes
From 24 hours once we have collected the body. How soon we can set off is decided by the Portuguese paperwork.
What coffin is needed
Portuguese law allows the zinc liner to be sealed no earlier than 24 hours after death, and only after registration. Earlier sealing is possible only on a written order from the health authority when there is a risk to public health. For a plane or a ship the coffin goes into rigid packaging marked “Handle with care” (MANUSEAR COM PRECAUÇÃO), and on the road it may travel only in a vehicle reserved for this purpose. The Ukrainian border also wants a hermetic metal coffin under seal, so one coffin satisfies both sides. Customs clearance goes on a written application with documents, which we prepare. More on the Air transport page.
Price of repatriation from Portugal
Body from Portugalfrom €4,800

Call us, day or night
Languages: Ukrainian, English, Polish, German. The same number in messengers.
If your relative is already buried in Portugal, we arrange the exhumation and bring the remains home to Ukraine for reburial. Our exhumation costs from €500 plus the cost of transport, with no prepayment.
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Portugal?
From €4,800. It is a long-distance route, and the amount already includes registration of the death, the livre-trânsito, the Ukrainian documents, the zinc-lined coffin, the flight and the road from the airport home. A funeral in Ukraine is separate. The final amount depends on the city in Portugal, the type of transport and the town in Ukraine.
How long does it take?
Allow from 24 hours between collection and arrival in Ukraine. Paperwork is usually the slowest part, which is why we run the Portuguese and Ukrainian files side by side whenever the law allows.
Why can the deceased not be placed in the coffin straight away?
The Portuguese rules require this: the death is registered first, and then a minimum period after death must pass. The details are in the section “What coffin is needed” above. We make sure these steps run without delays.
What is the Portuguese “body passport”?
It is called livre-trânsito. It is the document that lets the body cross borders. It is issued by the police, the GNR or the PSP. We obtain it ourselves.
The Embassy or the Consulate: which one should we apply to?
Ukraine has an Embassy in Lisbon and a Consulate in Porto. Which of the two takes the papers depends on where the death occurred. We submit the documents ourselves, so you do not need to travel.
Which documents do you need from the family?
You do not have to visit the conservatória or the police: we register the death and get the livre-trânsito. We ask the family for the deceased's passport or a photo of it, your own passport, proof of kinship and a power of attorney in our name. If you live in Portugal, you can sign it there. If you are in Ukraine, we will tell you how to do it locally.
Is embalming compulsory?
Portugal's transport law does not demand embalming as such. Some airlines, however, take only embalmed bodies on board, so it comes down to the flight. Preparation of the body is included in the price, and if embalming is needed we will say so beforehand. More on the Preparing the body page, and on coffins in the article Coffin and embalming for bringing a body to Ukraine.
The deceased had insurance. What should I do?
Before you agree to an offer from a funeral home or a hospital in Portugal, send us a photo of the policy. The insurer usually has to approve the costs in advance, otherwise the compensation can be lost. Over such a distance a policy often covers only the flight to an airport near Ukraine, so we will calculate the road from there separately and tell you at once.
Which cities in Portugal do you collect from?
Anywhere in Portugal, from big cities to small villages. A hospital, a morgue, a legal medicine institute or a private home: give us the address, and we come as soon as the death is on record.
Can an urn with ashes be brought home?
Yes. Outside a cemetery, Portuguese law lets ashes travel freely in a suitable container. Ukraine admits the urn with the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items legalised by the consulate, and we book its place on board with the airline in advance. Transport of an urn costs from €800. More on the Transport of an urn with ashes page.
