The journey from Thailand to Ukraine is long, so the body flies to an airport near Ukraine and our vehicle takes it on from there. The first paper about the death comes from the police or a hospital; the death certificate is issued in Thai by the district office (amphoe), and a foreigner's body is released only on a letter from the Embassy. We handle the translations, legalisation and the Embassy in parallel, and we work around the clock.

If it has just happened

  1. Call or write any time. We explain what to say. We contact hospital and police.
  2. Mention any insurance policy. We coordinate with the insurer.
  3. Name two cities. Where it happened. Where to bring the body. Enough for a price. The passport comes later.

What to do if someone has died in Thailand

Most often, it happens on a beach holiday or while spending the winter there. The family doesn't speak Thai, and outside the big cities, even an interpreter is hard to find. Call us at any time: we'll tell you the first step, and XREQUIEM then handles everything on the ground.

  1. The call and the price

We ask which island or town the body is in, whether the police have been, and which papers the hospital has issued. We name the price for delivery to your town straight away and put it in the contract.

  2. The police or the hospital

If the person did not die in a hospital, the local police must be told as soon as possible, and they write a report. If the person died in a hospital, the hospital issues a confirmation of death. Neither of these is yet the death certificate.

  3. An autopsy, if one is ordered

For foreigners in Thailand an autopsy is usually compulsory. It is carried out by forensic doctors. After the autopsy, the body is released, and we will tell you exactly when.

  4. The death certificate

With the police report or the hospital's confirmation, the death is registered at the district office (amphoe) or the municipality. There the death certificate is issued in Thai. We take care of the translation and the legalisation.

  5. The embassy letter and the Ukrainian side

Thai hospitals and authorities release a foreigner's body on a letter from the embassy of their country. We contact the Embassy of Ukraine in Bangkok, submit the documents and register the death of the Ukrainian citizen.

  6. Embalming and the coffin

An embalming certificate is needed to take the body out of Thailand, so the body is embalmed before the flight. It is then placed in a hermetically sealed coffin with a zinc liner and sealed.

  7. The flight and the way home

From Thailand the coffin usually lands in Poland, the nearest option to Ukraine. Our vehicle meets it at the airport, and the family receives the deceased where they wish.

Documents needed to bring the deceased home from Thailand

Thai papers come from different authorities: the police, the hospital and the district office. Which set you need depends on where and how the person died, so we confirm it with the local authorities for your case.

What Thailand issues

  • Police report, if the person did not die in a hospital. Without it the death cannot be registered.
  • Hospital confirmation of death, if the person died in a hospital. It is not a death certificate.
  • Death certificate: issued by the district office (amphoe) or the municipality. It is in Thai.
  • Autopsy documents, if there was an autopsy. The report is written in Thai and takes a long time.
  • The carrier's documents: the air waybill for the coffin and, if needed, an embalming certificate.

We go through these administrative steps on the family's behalf.

What we take on

  • We obtain the reports, the certificate and the other papers.
  • We obtain the Embassy letter for the release of the body.
  • We translate the certificate, have it legalised at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs and submit it to the Embassy of Ukraine.
  • We book the air transport and prepare the coffin as the Ukrainian border requires.
  • We prepare a customs declaration for the Ukrainian border.

What we need from you

  • The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
  • Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
  • A power of attorney for us. We will tell you how to draw it up.

General list: Documents. The first hours: What to do abroad.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Thailand

Ukraine has one mission in Thailand, the Embassy in Bangkok. The Thai death certificate is in Thai, so it is translated, legalised at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then submitted to the consul.

  • A Thai hospital or morgue usually releases a body only on a letter from the embassy stating to whom it may be released. For a Ukrainian citizen we request this letter from the Embassy of Ukraine in Bangkok.
  • The certificate of no prohibited items in the body and the coffin is issued by the Thai side and certified by the Ukrainian consulate. Without it, the Ukrainian border will not accept the body.
  • The district office issues one original certificate to the person who reported the death. A duplicate is very hard to get, often only through a Thai lawyer, so the original should be kept safe.

The family usually doesn't need to travel to Bangkok: we submit the papers to the Embassy and find out there how the death is registered, whether there is a consular fee and what is needed for funeral assistance. More about the consul: Consulate abroad.

How we bring the deceased home from Thailand

Thailand and Ukraine are thousands of kilometres apart, so a flight is unavoidable. There are no flights to Ukraine at present, and the coffin flies to an airport in a neighbouring country, most often Poland. We choose the flight and any connections for your case.

Where we collect from

We collect the body from Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui, Krabi, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin and any other town or island in Thailand. After the autopsy, the body is usually kept at a forensic institute or a large hospital, and we collect it from there. Tell us the town, and we'll give you the route and the price.

Plane plus vehicle

Flight from Thailand towards Ukraine, then our vehicle to your door.

How the coffin travels by air

The coffin travels in the hold of a passenger aircraft or on a cargo flight, usually with a connection from Thailand. We arrange the papers with every country on the route before booking.

How long it takes

The journey itself takes from 72 hours after the body is collected. Most of the waiting is for other things: the autopsy, the district office certificate, the Embassy letter and space on a flight.

The Ukrainian border accepts the body only in a metal, airtight, sealed coffin; ours has a zinc liner. Customs clearance is done on a written statement with documents, which we prepare. We don't promise direct flights. Details: Air transport.

What to know about Thailand

Here is what affects the timing and the set of papers in Thailand. Sources: the UK government guidance “What to do after a British person dies in Thailand” and its guidance on suspicious deaths in Thailand, the Dutch government page on death in Thailand, and guidance from the Australian and Swiss embassies in Bangkok (checked on 23 October 2026). This guidance was written for foreigners in general, so we check each point with the Thai authorities for your case.

  • Do not delay the decision. According to the British guidance, if the family has not arranged a funeral or transport within about 30 days, the body may be cremated and buried as unclaimed. So call us at once, even if you have not yet decided what to do.
  • Where the autopsy is done. The body is usually taken to a forensic institute or a large hospital. Standards vary across the country; in Bangkok, examinations are usually more thorough than in the provinces.
  • The autopsy and tissue samples. During an autopsy, tissue samples or organs may be kept for tests without the family's consent, and the family is not told. The autopsy report is written in Thai, takes about 45 working days, and is collected from the police who handled the case.
  • A suspicious death. If the death is under investigation, the body is usually kept at the Police Forensic Science Institute for up to 30 days, after which a daily storage fee is charged.
  • Infectious diseases. An infectious disease such as hepatitis is reported to the local authorities. If there was such a diagnosis, tell us straight away.
  • Cremation on the spot. In Thailand the dead are mostly cremated. Cremation is possible once the Thai authorities consider the cause of death established and the body is no longer needed for examination. If you are considering cremation there and bringing home the urn, tell us before we book the flight.
  • Hospital bills. Hospitals usually release the body only after the bill for treatment has been paid. Show us the insurance policy: its terms often cover both the hospital and the transport.

Questions about repatriation from Thailand

How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Thailand?

From €4,500 in total: the breakdown is above, and the final amount goes into the contract. More in the article How much does repatriation cost.

How long does repatriation from Thailand take?

The journey itself takes from 72 hours. Most of the waiting is usually for papers: the autopsy report, the district office certificate, translation and legalisation at the Thai Foreign Ministry, and the Embassy letter. We do all of this at the same time.

Is an autopsy compulsory?

For foreigners in Thailand an autopsy is usually compulsory. An exception is possible if the person died in a hospital of a known cause; if the death was sudden, unnatural or violent, there will be an autopsy. You can object on religious grounds by telling the police, but the police do not have to agree. We stay in touch with the authorities and will tell you when the body is released.

Who issues the death certificate in Thailand?

The district office (amphoe) or the municipality for the place of death. The hospital issues only a confirmation of death, and the police a report: these are different documents, needed for the registration. The certificate is in Thai, so for Ukraine it is translated and legalised at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Is embalming needed?

In most cases, yes. The embalming certificate is part of the papers for taking the body out of Thailand, and the flight is long with a connection. So we arrange embalming straight away. More: on preparing the body.

Which documents do you need from the family?

We need the deceased's passport or a photo of it, your passport, proof of the family relationship and a power of attorney for us. We handle the rest, from the police report to the Embassy letter in Bangkok.

Do I have to fly to Thailand?

Usually not. A hospital or funeral service can register the death at the district office on the family's behalf, so you don't need to come. If your signature is needed in person, we'll tell you in advance. Staying in touch from home: If the family cannot travel.

What kind of coffin is needed?

Metal, airtight and sealed, as the Ukrainian border requires. We agree the exact model with the airline flying from Thailand. Types of coffins: Coffins.

Who pays if the person was on a package tour?

The insurer pays if the policy covers repatriation of the body. Thai hospitals often release the body only after the bill is paid, so the policy is needed as soon as possible: send us a photo, and we'll contact the insurer ourselves. Don't pay anything yourself before the insurer agrees, or the money may not be refunded. More in the article on insurance.

Can an urn with ashes be brought home from Thailand?

Yes, from €1,800. Cremation is common in Thailand, and cemetery plots there are mostly reserved for local communities, so a burial on the spot is difficult. To cross the Ukrainian border with an urn, you need the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items certified by the consulate; a cremation certificate is also advisable. Whether the urn can go in the cabin is up to the airline. More: Transporting an urn with ashes.
