Summary. From €3,900 covers the whole way from Montenegro to your town in Ukraine, with the documents and the coffin; the funeral in Ukraine is extra. There is no shared border, so our vehicle drives in transit, or the coffin flies out of Podgorica or Tivat for part of the way (from 2.5 hours in the air). The Ministry of Internal Affairs issues the death certificate, and the sealed metal coffin travels in a funeral vehicle with special equipment. Home in from 24 hours after collection. Call, and within 5 minutes you have the exact price.
The person may have gone to the coast on holiday, or may have been working there. However it happened, the steps are the same. In Montenegro we handle everything ourselves, and XREQUIEM runs the whole case for you.
We listen and give you the price
First, we find out in which municipality the person died: that is where the death goes into the register of deaths. Then we ask where the body is now and which papers you hold, and give you the sum to your town straight away.
We arrange collection with the hospital
Morgues in Montenegro are attached to hospitals. We contact the hospital ourselves and agree when the deceased can be collected.
We obtain the death certificate
It is issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Montenegro. In a hospital or hotel, the institution itself reports the death; at home, the doctor who confirmed it or the family does. We also take the register extract.
We arrange the permit to transport the body
We submit an application stating the border crossing point and the country of destination, Ukraine. We attach an identity document, the extract from the death register and a confirmation of death. If a separate decision and an accompanying letter are needed, we obtain those too.
We prepare the body and the coffin
For the Ukrainian border, the body goes into a sealed, hermetic metal coffin. A funeral vehicle with special equipment carries it: Montenegrin rules allow other transport only in exceptional situations.
We handle the Ukrainian side
The Montenegrin ministry itself informs the foreigner's home state about the death record, but that is not enough for the family. So we translate and certify the papers and take them to the Embassy of Ukraine in Podgorica, where the death is registered and the border documents are prepared.
We bring the deceased home
By road through neighbouring countries, or by plane from Podgorica or Tivat and then by road. We hand the deceased over to the family in your town. A funeral can be arranged too, in any town in Ukraine.
Here is what is issued locally and what we do. Some papers are not needed in every case; we will tell you which ones you will need.
What Montenegro issues
Death certificate: issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Montenegro.
Izvod iz knjige umrlih: an extract from the death register. It is attached to the transport application.
Confirmation of death: it also goes with the application, together with an identity document.
Rješenje: the decision that permits the transport. It is issued in a number of cases, for example when the death was caused by an infectious disease.
Sprovodnica: an accompanying letter for the body, something like a “body passport”. It is signed by a sanitary inspector. It is needed in the same cases as the decision.
When the body is embalmed, the package usually also includes an embalming certificate, certificates from the Ministry of Health that the deceased had no quarantine or infectious disease, and our certificate that the coffin is hermetic.
What we take on
We collect the documents from the hospital and the relevant offices.
We submit the transport application and, when a decision and an accompanying letter are needed, we obtain those too.
We translate everything into Ukrainian and certify it.
We file the papers with the Embassy in Podgorica under your power of attorney.
We prepare the declaration and the package for customs at the Ukrainian border.
What we need from you
The deceased's passport. If the hospital or police hold it, send a photo: the transport application needs proof of identity.
Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
A power of attorney for us. Montenegrin rules let the family authorise a person or company to apply.
A separate Montenegrin regulation (pravilnik) of 2020 describes how to transport a body after death from an infectious disease and how to rebury a body, including abroad. It also sets out the form of the accompanying letter. You do not need to work through it: we know what to submit and where. The general list of papers is in the Documents section.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Montenegro
There are no Ukrainian consulates in Montenegrin towns; the Embassy in Podgorica handles everything, and its emergency number is kept for threats to life or the death of Ukrainian citizens. Under Montenegrin rules, a foreign embassy may even file the body transport application itself.
The consul registers a Ukrainian citizen's death from the medical document and the extract from the death register of the municipality where it happened.
We hand Montenegrin papers to the consul translated and certified.
No consular fee for registration and the first certificate.
The consul's certificate gives the family the funeral allowance.
The Ukrainian border admits the body only with a certificate of no prohibited items: a Montenegrin authority issues it and the Embassy certifies it.
Other countries lie between Montenegro and Ukraine, so the route is a transit one. The crossing point where the coffin leaves Montenegro is written into both the application and the accompanying letter, so we agree the route with the family before filing.
Where we collect from
We collect the deceased from Podgorica, Budva, Kotor, Bar, Herceg Novi, Tivat and any other Montenegrin town or village. Tell us where the body is now, and we agree the day.
By road
Our funeral vehicle collects the coffin and drives in transit through neighbouring countries to the Ukrainian border, then on to your town.
Plane and road
For a flight, the body is placed in a hermetic metal box with a valve filter, and the box goes into a wooden coffin. On a regular flight, it travels in a hold section kept apart from luggage. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine: the plane flies to an airport near Ukraine, and the journey continues by road. The air leg takes from 2.5 hours.
How long it takes
The road itself takes from 24 hours after collection. The register entry, the transport application and the Embassy run at the same time, so the coffin does not wait for papers.
Ukrainian customs clear the body on a written declaration, with the Podgorica file attached. The body must travel in a hermetic metal coffin, which is sealed. We write the declaration. You can read more on the pages Road transport and Air transport.

Call us, day or night
Languages: Ukrainian, English, Polish, German. The same number in messengers.
If your relative is already buried in Montenegro, we arrange the exhumation and bring the remains home to Ukraine for reburial. Our exhumation costs from €500 plus the cost of transport, with no prepayment.
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Montenegro?
From €3,900 for the whole way. The sum moves with the town in Montenegro, the town in Ukraine and whether the coffin flies out of Podgorica or Tivat. The article How much it costs to bring a body home to Ukraine from abroad breaks the price down, and all prices are on the Prices page.
How long does it take?
The road takes from 24 hours after collection, and a flight leg from 2.5 hours. Paper is the slow part: the register entry, the death certificate, the transport application with the border crossing named in it, and the Embassy. We run them side by side.
We were on holiday. Does someone need to stay in Montenegro?
In most cases, no. Montenegrin rules let the family authorise someone else to file the transport application, so once you sign the power of attorney, we take over and keep you updated by phone or messenger. If an office wants a relative in person, we warn you early.
Which documents do you need from the family?
The deceased's passport (or a photo), your passport, proof of kinship and a power of attorney for us. Kinship matters: in Montenegro, the application comes from close family, or, if there is none, from other relatives in order of inheritance. The certificate, extract, permit, accompanying letter, translations and Embassy papers are ours to arrange.
Is embalming compulsory?
Not always. It is compulsory when a body is taken across the ocean. For the journey to Ukraine it depends on the route and the carrier: some airlines accept only embalmed bodies. In Montenegro embalming is done only at the Clinical Centre in Podgorica, and it is best done within 72 hours. So we settle the question of embalming on the very first day. You can read more about preparing the body.
What kind of coffin is needed?
For the Ukrainian border: a hermetic metal coffin, which is sealed. For a flight, the Montenegrin regulation describes a hermetic metal box with a valve filter inside a wooden coffin. We prepare a coffin that suits both countries. The kinds of coffin are described on the Coffins page.
The person had travel insurance. Will it cover the transport?
It may. Send us a photo of the policy. In Montenegro, a foreign insurer can file the transport application itself, so we settle the terms with it directly. Agree any local funeral home with the insurer first, or the compensation may be lost. Many policies pay only as far as the border, and we name the gap in advance. More in the article on insurance.
Which towns in Montenegro do you collect from?
From anywhere in the country. If the death was in a hospital or hotel, that institution reports it to the register; at home, the doctor who confirmed it or the family does. Name the town and the place, and we give you a collection day.
What should I do first?
Call us and keep the passport and any policy at hand; the top of this page and What to do if a loved one dies abroad go further. Pay no one in Montenegro before you know the full price home.
Can you bring home an urn with ashes?
Yes, from €800. The Ukrainian border admits an urn with the death certificate and a certificate of no prohibited items certified by the Embassy in Podgorica. Details: Transport of an urn with ashes.
