Romania shares a border with Ukraine, so the deceased travels home by road through one of five crossings, from Siret in the east to Halmeu in the north-west. Romanian rules are strict: embalming is required for any transport outside the locality, and the county public health directorate issues both the removal permit and the mortuary passport.
If it has just happened
The Romanian procedure has many steps. You do not need to know them. Here is how we work through them.
We ask which county (județ) and town the death occurred in, because that county's health directorate will issue the papers. You get the price during the same call.
The doctor issues the medical certificate of death, and with it, the town hall (primărie) registers the death. We collect the certificat de deces there.
Romanian law requires embalming for any transport outside the locality where the death occurred. We prepare the body and a hermetically sealed coffin.
The county public health directorate (DSP) issues two papers: the removal permit and the pașaport de transport mortuar. In Bucharest, the city directorate does it. We apply for both.
We translate the Romanian papers into Ukrainian, have them certified, and take them to the Embassy of Ukraine in Bucharest, which also certifies the paper for the border.
Through one of the five road border crossings. We take care of customs clearance.
After Porubne or Solotvyno, we drive straight to your town. We can also organise the funeral in Ukraine.
We work out your price
Call or leave your number.
We make the requests to the authorities, wait in the queues and sign; you do not need to speak Romanian. The full list is on the Documents page.
Taking a body out of Romania requires the consent of the country it is going to. For Ukraine, this consent is arranged by the Embassy of Ukraine in Bucharest. That is why we work with the Embassy from the first day, not at the end.
The Ukrainian border still needs its own documents, so we prepare both parts together.
In Romania these rules are stricter than in many countries.
Ukrainian customs require a hermetic metal coffin that is sealed. We prepare the coffin so that it meets both the Romanian and the Ukrainian rules. The embalming is done by a specialist and, if you wish, we will explain every step to you. More on the pages Preparing the body and Coffins.

We handle consular matters in Romania through the Embassy of Ukraine in Bucharest. The consul registers the death of a Ukrainian citizen at the place where the person died or lived, where the body was found, or where they are buried.
If the death happened some time ago and has still not been registered, the consul can register it anyway, with a note about the missed deadline. More about the consulate is on the page “What to do if a loved one dies abroad”.
From the Romanian morgue to your town, the deceased travels in our specialist vehicle, with no flight involved. Counting from collection, the journey takes from 24 hours. The longest wait is usually for the permit and the mortuary passport from the county health directorate, then for the queue at the border crossing. Read how road transport works.
Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Constanța, Iași, Suceava, Satu Mare or a village anywhere in Romania: we collect from the hospital, the morgue or wherever the deceased is. Please name the town at once, since the county decides which health directorate issues the permit.
There are five road border crossings between Ukraine and Romania. We choose the most convenient one for your town, whether it is in Zakarpattia, Bukovyna or further afield.
| Ukraine | Romania |
|---|---|
| Diakove | Halmeu |
| Solotvyno | Sighetu Marmației |
| Porubne | Siret |
| Diakivtsi | Racovăț |
| Krasnoilsk | Vicovu de Sus |
The price covers the road from the Romanian morgue to your home, including the embalming that Romanian law requires. A funeral in Ukraine is a separate service.
The price includes:
Coffin of your choice and urn: free of charge.
The final sum can change with the distance from the city to the border (from Suceava or Satu Mare it is close, from Bucharest or Constanța it is far), the coffin you choose, the number of translations needed and your town in Ukraine. Tell us the town and we will work out the price straight away. You can compare with other countries on the Prices page.

From €1,500 for the whole way from Romania, with the embalming Romania requires already included. A funeral in Ukraine is separate. What the price consists of is explained in the article “How much it costs to bring a body home to Ukraine from abroad”.
The way home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after the body is collected. In Romania the death is registered within 3 days. After that come the permit and the mortuary passport from the county health directorate, and the work with the Embassy. We run these steps in parallel.
In Romania, no, if the body is being taken outside the locality: the law requires it. Embalming is part of our work, so you do not need to look for a specialist yourself. What preparing the body involves is explained on a separate page.
Romania requires an impermeable, hermetically closed coffin placed in a tightly closed wooden crate for international transport. The Ukrainian border accepts a sealed metal coffin. We prepare one that satisfies both.
The deceased's passport (or a copy), your passport and a document confirming the family relationship. We arrange the medical certificate, the death certificate at the town hall, the DSP permit, the mortuary passport and the translations. You do not need to order embalming separately: it is part of our preparation of the body.
Usually not. We arrange the embalming, the permit at the county health directorate and the mortuary passport, and we submit the documents to the Embassy in Bucharest ourselves. If someone in the family wants to say goodbye while the deceased is still in Romania, tell us and we will agree a time with the morgue. What can be done from home is covered in the article “If the family cannot travel abroad”.
Tell us straight away. In Romania a death is registered within 3 days, so the town hall needs to be contacted as soon as possible, and we will do that. The Ukrainian consul can register a death later too, with a note about the missed deadline.
From any town or city: Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași, Constanța, Brașov, Suceava, Baia Mare, Satu Mare, Oradea and others.
The crossing closest to your town: Diakove, Solotvyno, Porubne, Diakivtsi or Krasnoilsk. For Bukovyna, Porubne is more convenient; for Zakarpattia, Solotvyno or Diakove.
Then we bring the urn with the ashes home, from €800. To take ashes out of Romania, you need the certificate of cremation, and at the Ukrainian border, an urn needs the same documents as a coffin. How we transport an urn is described on the page “Transport of an urn with ashes to Ukraine”.
