Most often, a Ukrainian who dies in Vietnam was there on vacation, and less often, for work. The family is far away and the time limits for keeping the body there are short, which matters for repatriation from Vietnam. Below is a step-by-step guide: what documents Vietnam issues, who to call, and what can be done from Ukraine.
Briefly in 30 seconds.
“You were always available, whatever the time…” — Віта Х. “Everything was organised with great dignity, professionally and with attention to every detail.” — Тамара Ю. “Every question was resolved promptly, with respect and attention to detail.” — Olha B. “…your support, compassion, sense of responsibility and professionalism meant a great deal to us.” — Ірина Б. “It all went quickly and professionally…” — Оля К. If the death occurred in a hospital, the hospital issues a death notice. If it happened in a hotel, on a beach, or on the road, the police arrive. The local provincial department of foreign affairs and the embassy of the country of citizenship are notified of the foreigner's death.
The family should immediately:
Vietnamese sanitary rules limit how long a body can be kept before burial or cremation: up to 48 hours without cooling, up to 7 days at a temperature of up to 4 °C, and longer only at a temperature of −10 °C and below. Therefore, it is best to make a decision about repatriation or cremation in the first few days.
The hospital (or the police, if the death occurred outside a hospital) issues a death notice (giấy báo tử). Based on it, the civil registry office registers the death and issues an extract (trích lục khai tử).
To transport the body across the border, it is placed in a three-layer coffin: a sealed zinc liner with a moisture absorber, wood, and plywood. At the border, the body is declared to the quarantine service and a quarantine certificate is obtained. Vietnamese rules do not require embalming, but the airline may require it. The Embassy of Ukraine operates in Hanoi (6B Le Hong Phong, Ba Dinh). There are no Consulates General of Ukraine in Vietnam, so the embassy handles all consular matters.
The consul registers the death of a citizen of Ukraine and issues a Ukrainian death certificate; the first copy is issued without a consular fee. For the Ukrainian border, the embassy certifies a statement confirming the absence of unauthorized items inside the body and the coffin. Read more: consulate in the event of a death abroad.
Vietnam has joined the Apostille Convention; since September 11, 2026, Vietnamese documents are certified with an apostille affixed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam. Ukraine has raised no objections. The document is translated into Ukrainian.
The case can be handled from Ukraine: relatives execute a power of attorney with a notary, affix an apostille, and have it translated into Vietnamese. Our partners collect the documents on site. Read more: if the family cannot travel.
