If it has just happened

- Name two cities. Where it happened. Where to bring the body. Enough for a price. The passport comes later.
From the first call to home: how it works in Sweden
Without a passersedel from the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) the body cannot leave the country. The agency issues it only once a doctor can sign the burial certificate and the funeral firm has certified the coffin. We write that coffin certificate, then put the file together and prepare the Ukrainian papers. If the hospital or the police ask who is moving the body, give them our number +380 77 882 77 77 and leave the rest to us. We speak Ukrainian, English, Polish and German, so the hospital can call us in English. Calls abroad too expensive? Message us on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram, or leave your number and we call back.
We listen and give you the price
Which Swedish city, which hospital or morgue, and which papers you already hold. You hear the price in the same call.
We contact the hospital
The doctor who confirmed the death draws up the death certificate (dödsbevis) no later than the first working day afterwards. Another document is the certificate of the cause of death. We arrange with the hospital when the deceased can be collected.
We prepare the coffin
We place the deceased in a coffin that meets the Swedish rules for taking a body out of the country, and issue a certificate confirming this and that the coffin holds only the body and personal belongings.
We obtain the passersedel
This is the pass for the body from Skatteverket, in effect a “body passport”. It is issued once the certificate for burial can be issued and our certificate about the coffin is in hand.
We handle the Ukrainian side
We translate and certify the Swedish papers and prepare the no prohibited items certificate for the Embassy of Ukraine in Lidingö.
We bring the deceased home
The coffin flies to an airport in a country next to Ukraine and our car takes it from there. The other way is all on land: a ferry across the Baltic, then Poland. The family receives the body in its own town.
We close the Swedish formalities
After the body has left Sweden, the person who arranged the border crossing must return a copy of the pass to Skatteverket within 2 weeks, marked to show that the body has left. We do this too.

Documents in Sweden
The Swedish names are long, but there are not many documents. Here is what is issued and what we do with it.
What Sweden issues
- Dödsbevis: the death certificate. It is written by the doctor who confirmed the death.
- Intyg om dödsorsaken: the certificate of the cause of death. The doctor sends it to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen).
- Intyg för gravsättning: the certificate for burial.
- Passersedel: the pass for the body from Skatteverket. It is drawn up in Swedish and in English or French, and it travels with the body all the way.
- Our certificate that the coffin meets the requirements and contains only the body and personal belongings.
What we take on
- We gather the medical documents and issue the certificate about the coffin.
- We obtain the passersedel and, after the body has left, return the marked copy.
- We have the documents certified as Ukraine requires and translated into Ukrainian.
- We put together everything the embassy and Ukrainian border customs will ask for.
What we need from you
- The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
- Your passport and a document showing you are a relative.
- A power of attorney for us; we explain how.
Sweden signed the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on moving the dead; Ukraine did not. So a passersedel alone is not enough at our border. We also carry Ukrainian papers: a death certificate and a certificate that the body and coffin hold nothing prohibited. The rest of the list is on the “Documents” page.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Sweden
The Embassy of Ukraine in Sweden is in Lidingö, a suburb of Stockholm.
- The death of a Ukrainian citizen abroad is usually registered by the consul for the place of death, residence, discovery of the body or burial. We will check with the embassy whether this is possible in your case.
- We certify and translate the Swedish papers for the consul.
- No consular fee applies to the registration of the death and the first certificate.
- With the consul's certificate the family claims a funeral allowance in Ukraine.
- The embassy in Lidingö stamps the no prohibited items certificate. Without that stamp, the Ukrainian border will not let the body through.

How we bring the deceased home from Sweden
From Sweden the body travels in stages, by air and road or by road and sea. You and we pick the route together.
Where we collect from
We come to a hospital, morgue or other place anywhere in Sweden: Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Uppsala, Västerås and small villages too. If the death was not caused by illness, the doctor tells the police. The police may order a forensic autopsy at the National Board of Forensic Medicine (Rättsmedicinalverket), and the family cannot refuse it. The board has units in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Linköping, Lund, Umeå and Uppsala. We collect the body there as soon as it is released.
Plane and road
By air: the coffin flies in the cargo hold to an airport in a country next to Ukraine, where our car is waiting. It spends from 2.5 hours in the air. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine.
Road only
By road with a ferry across the Baltic Sea, and then on through Poland. It takes longer, but there is no handling at airports.
How long it takes
We count from the moment we collect the body: from 24 hours to your town. The wait for Swedish documents is usually longer than the drive itself.
The coffin for transport out of Sweden
Swedish rules require a coffin that does not let moisture through, with an absorbent material inside. That is either a wooden coffin with walls at least 2 cm thick and a hermetically sealed coffin with a zinc liner inside, or a wooden coffin with walls at least 3 cm thick, lined with zinc. For a flight it also needs a pressure-equalising filter, or it must be strong enough. A coffin sent as ordinary freight is packed so that it does not look like a coffin, and is marked “handle with care”.
The Ukrainian border asks for a sealed, airtight metal coffin. The Swedish zinc coffin meets that rule, so one coffin serves both borders. Details on the pages “Coffins and sealed zinc liners” and “Air transport”.
Price of repatriation from Sweden
It is the cost of the entire journey home; the funeral in Ukraine is a different service with its own price.
What the price includes
The price includes:
- contact with hospital and morgue
- local, consular, border documents
- preparing the body for travel
- hermetically sealed coffin with a zinc liner for transport

What can change the price

Questions about repatriation from Sweden
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Sweden?
From €2,900 for the whole journey home, covering the Swedish and Ukrainian papers, preparing the body, the hermetically sealed coffin with a zinc liner, the road and customs. A funeral in Ukraine is extra. We confirm the final sum once we know both towns and whether the coffin flies.
How long does the journey take?
From 24 hours after we collect the body. A flight, if the route has one, takes from 2.5 hours. Paperwork takes the most time, so we run the Swedish and Ukrainian sides at once.
What should I do first?
Call us and name the two towns. The other steps are at the top of this page and on “What to do if a loved one dies abroad”. Pay no one until you know the full price.
What is the body passport (passersedel)?
The passersedel is the pass for the body issued by Skatteverket, in effect a “body passport”. Without it, the body cannot be taken out of Sweden. It is drawn up in Swedish and in English or French and travels with the coffin. We obtain it.
Do I need to travel to Sweden?
Usually not. With your power of attorney, we deal with the hospital and get the passersedel. If a Swedish or Ukrainian office wants a relative to sign in person, we warn you early. How to help from home: “If the family cannot travel abroad”.
Which documents do you need from the family?
From the family: the deceased's passport or a photo of it, your passport, proof of kinship and a power of attorney for us. The dödsbevis, passersedel, translations and the embassy file we prepare.
What kind of coffin is needed? Is embalming required?
The coffin does not let moisture through and has zinc and an absorbent material inside, and for a flight it also has pressure equalisation. It is already in the price. As for embalming: some airlines accept only embalmed bodies, so the decision depends on the route and the carrier. We will tell you in advance if the amount changes. More in “Preparing the body”.
The deceased had insurance. What should I do?
Keep the policy at hand and tell us about it on the first call. The transport must be approved by the insurer, otherwise the compensation can be refused; we deal with that. We will tell you in advance about any part the policy does not cover.
Which cities in Sweden do you collect from?
Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Uppsala, Västerås and any smaller place. If the body is at the National Board of Forensic Medicine after an autopsy, we collect it from there once released. Send us the address and we say when we can come.
Can you bring home an urn with ashes?
Yes. Before ashes leave Sweden, the crematorium issues an extract from its cremation register (utdrag ur kremationsjournalen). After export we confirm it and send it back to the crematorium, which informs Skatteverket. At the Ukrainian border the urn needs the death certificate and a no prohibited items certificate stamped by the embassy. It costs from €800. Details: “Urn transport”.
