Summary. In Denmark a doctor writes the death certificate and reports the death electronically. To take the body abroad you then need the ligpas from the Danish Patient Safety Authority, legalised by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The coffin is sealed shut, and a flight also needs embalming. We drive through Germany and Poland or add an air leg. Call us and within 5 minutes you will have the exact price.

If it has just happened
- Call or write any time. We explain what to say. We contact hospital and police.
- Mention any insurance policy. We coordinate with the insurer.
- Name two cities. Where it happened. Where to bring the body. Enough for a price. The passport comes later.
The steps, from the first call to your town
The main Danish document for taking a body out of the country is the ligpas, a “body passport”. Getting it requires several certificates and a prepared coffin. Here is the whole route.
The first conversation
We ask which hospital or town in Denmark the deceased is in and which relative will speak with us. You hear the price in that same call.
The death certificate
The death certificate (dødsattest) is written by a doctor: the GP or the doctor on call at home, the ward doctor in hospital. We need its medical data, in particular whether there was an infectious disease.
Registering the death with the parish
In Denmark the death is confirmed by the burial authority, which is the church parish where the death occurred.
The hermetically sealed coffin with a zinc liner
We solder the zinc coffin shut and fill in the soldering certificate, the loddeattest. We do this. We keep track of the deadlines.
Embalming, if the deceased travels by air
For transport by plane the body is embalmed and an embalming certificate is issued.
The ligpas and legalisation
Once the ligpas is issued, it is legalised at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, because Ukraine is not a party to the agreements that simplify the transport of bodies.
The journey and handing over to the family
Through Germany and Poland, or partly by air, right to your town.

Documents in Denmark
The ligpas is issued by the supervision and advice units of the Danish Patient Safety Authority (Styrelsen for Patientsikkerhed). The application is submitted with the following documents.
The package for the ligpas
- Dødsattest: the medical data from the death certificate, including any infectious disease.
- Confirmation of the registration of the death: the parish's decision on the application “Anmodning om Begravelse og Kremering”.
- Our application for permission to transport the body abroad, with a description of the coffin.
- Loddeattest: the certificate that the zinc coffin has been soldered shut.
- Balsameringsattest: the embalming certificate, if the body travels by plane.
What we do
- We collect the medical data and the confirmation from the parish.
- We seal the zinc liner shut ourselves and, if the route includes a flight, arrange the embalming.
- We make sure the ligpas application is submitted on time and arrange the legalisation at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- We arrange the translations into Ukrainian.
- For Ukraine we add a no-foreign-objects certificate and the customs declaration.
What we need from you
- The deceased's passport, if you have it.
- Your passport and a document showing you are a relative.
- Your consent for us to act on behalf of the family.
Why legalisation? Ukraine is not a party to the international agreements that simplify the transport of bodies, so Danish rules require the ligpas to be legalised at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Denmark
The Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of Denmark is in Copenhagen. There is an honorary consulate in Outrup, in the Region of Southern Denmark. An honorary consul does not issue documents; for that you need the embassy.
What the consul of Ukraine does when a citizen of Ukraine dies:
- registers the death (at the place of residence, the place of death, the place where the body was found or the place of burial);
- issues the first death certificate free of consular fees;
- issues a certificate that the family uses to apply for the funeral allowance in Ukraine;
- legalises the certificate that the coffin contains no foreign objects, which Ukrainian law requires when a body is brought into Ukraine.
We check the list of documents for the consulate with the embassy in Copenhagen each time.
How we bring the deceased home from Denmark
Denmark is far from Ukraine, so we choose the route together with you. How the body is prepared depends on it: for a flight, Danish rules require embalming.
Where we collect from
Copenhagen on Zealand, Aarhus and Aalborg in Jutland, Odense on Funen, Esbjerg on the west coast, Bornholm and the smaller islands: we collect from a hospital, a morgue or wherever the deceased is. Tell us where, and we will work out the route and the cost.
All the way by road
Our specialist vehicle takes the sealed coffin from Denmark to the Ukrainian border and on to your town. The road is long, through Germany and Poland, so we allow more time for it than for a route by air.
Plane and road
We do not promise a direct flight. The coffin flies to Warsaw, Rzeszów or Chișinău, which takes from 2.5 hours, and our vehicle drives it the rest of the way.
Timing
From 24 hours after we collect the body. The longest wait is usually for the ligpas: the Danish authority accepts the documents for it only on paper.
The ligpas application states what the coffin is made of. Lighter rules apply only to coffins going to Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden, and Ukraine is not on that list. Our border also requires a metal, hermetic, sealed coffin. More on the pages “Road transport” and “Air transport”.

Questions about repatriation from Denmark
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Denmark?
From €2,800 for the whole journey home: documents, the ligpas and legalisation, the hermetically sealed coffin with a zinc liner, preparing the body, transport and crossing the border. A funeral in Ukraine is separate.
How long does it take?
From 24 hours after collection, and an air leg itself takes from 2.5 hours. Most of the time goes on the ligpas and its legalisation, because the Danish authority accepts the documents only in paper form.
What is a ligpas?
It is the Danish permit to take a body to another country, a “body passport”. It is issued by the Danish Patient Safety Authority. We submit the application, with a description of the coffin.
Why is a hermetically sealed coffin with a zinc liner needed?
Danish rules require the zinc coffin to be soldered shut and a soldering certificate filled in when a body leaves the country; we do this. Ukrainian law also requires a metal, hermetic and sealed coffin. More about coffins on the page “Coffins and sealed zinc liners”.
Is embalming compulsory?
For a flight, yes: Danish rules ask for an embalming certificate (balsameringsattest) with the ligpas application. By road, we choose how to prepare the body for your case. Preparation is already in the price, and if embalming is needed, we will say in advance whether the amount changes. More in “Preparing the body”.
Which documents do you need from the family?
From you: the deceased's passport (if you have it), your passport and proof that you are related. The dødsattest, the ligpas, its legalisation and the translations are on us.
Do I need to travel to Denmark?
Usually not. The Danish authority takes the ligpas documents only on paper, and we hand them in. If an office wants to see a relative in person, we will tell you in advance. What can be done from home is in the article “If the family cannot travel abroad”.
What should I do first if there was insurance?
Mention the policy in the first conversation. We get the insurer's approval for the transport ourselves, because without it the compensation can be refused. If the policy leaves part of the cost uncovered, you will know before we start.
Which cities in Denmark do you collect from?
Anywhere in Denmark: Zealand, Funen, Jutland, Bornholm and the smaller islands. We collect from a hospital, a morgue or wherever the deceased is.
Can you bring home an urn with ashes?
Yes, and in Denmark ashes need no ligpas. At our border the urn passes with the death certificate and a no-foreign-objects certificate, and customs clear it on a written declaration. An urn from Denmark: from €800. More in “Urn transport”.
