What changes the total: the city and distance, the route (road or air), the country’s documents, preparation of the body. More about prices →
Summary. Slovakia borders Ukraine, so no flight is needed: we drive a specialist vehicle through Uzhhorod or Malyi Bereznyi. The body passport (pas pre mŕtvolu) is usually issued by the self-governing region, and we handle the Ukrainian side of the paperwork through the embassy in Bratislava.
When someone close to you dies in another country, the hardest part is not knowing where to start. We take on every step and explain each one.
We talk and give you the price
Tell us the Slovak town where the death occurred and where the body is now. The town decides the road to the border, so we give you the price during that same call.
We contact the Slovak side
We agree with the hospital or the morgue when the deceased can be collected. We deal with them ourselves.
The Slovak death certificate
We obtain the úmrtný list from the civil registry office (matrika) at the place of death.
The permit to take the body out
Slovak law forbids moving a body without a fully completed record of the death, and leaving the country requires a pas pre mŕtvolu. We apply for it ourselves.
The Embassy of Ukraine
We translate the Slovak documents into Ukrainian, submit them in Bratislava to register the death and collect the certificate for the border.
The border
We cross at Uzhhorod or Malyi Bereznyi and handle customs clearance ourselves.
Home
After Uzhhorod or Malyi Bereznyi we drive on to your town, where the family receives the deceased. We can also take on the funeral in Ukraine.
List o prehliadke mŕtveho: the report of the examination of the deceased. A doctor issues it in three copies.
Úmrtný list: the death certificate from the matrika at the place of death. Slovak law calls the person who presents it and arranges the funeral the obstarávateľ pohrebu.
Pas pre mŕtvolu: the body passport. It is usually issued by the self-governing region (samosprávny kraj); the exceptions are below.
What we need from you
The deceased's passport, or a copy.
Your passport and a document showing you are a relative.
The town and the hospital where the death occurred: the death certificate is issued by the matrika at exactly that place.
Whether a post mortem was done, if you know: it determines who issues the body passport.
We handle the rest of the paperwork, both Slovak and for the Ukrainian border. We talk to the Slovak authorities ourselves, so you will not need the language. The full list is on the Documents page.
Who issues the body passport in special cases
Usually the body passport is issued by the self-governing region. There are two exceptions. If the deceased had a dangerous infection, the document is issued by the regional public health authority (RÚVZ). If a post mortem was done, it is issued by a branch of the Health Care Surveillance Authority (ÚDZS). We know where to apply in each case.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Slovakia
All consular matters in Slovakia go through the Embassy of Ukraine in Bratislava. Even when the death occurred in Košice or Prešov, that is where we submit the documents.
The consul registers the death of a Ukrainian citizen from the Slovak medical document and the death certificate, in a certified Ukrainian translation. There is no fee for the registration or the first certificate.
The consul also issues a certificate for the funeral allowance.
The certificate of no prohibited items, which Ukrainian customs checks, is certified by the consulate.
The Ukrainian death certificate is given to close relatives or sent through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. For what else is worth knowing in the first days, see “What to do if a loved one dies abroad”.
The deceased's belongings and documents
Families often ask what will happen to the belongings, the phone and the money on the card. That is a separate matter from the transport, but we will tell you where to start.
The Ukrainian consul helps to safeguard the belongings and money the person left behind. Tell the consulate if belongings remain in rented housing or at the workplace.
After the death is registered, the passport and other documents of the deceased are returned to the person accompanying the body or sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
If any belongings need to go to Ukraine, tell us in advance and we will agree how to do it.
How we bring the deceased home from Slovakia
No flight is needed; we go by road. Slovak law allows a body to travel by road only in a vehicle built or adapted for the purpose: with cooling, fixings for the coffin and a cab separated from the load space. That is how we travel. The road home takes from 24 hours after collection, and the exact time depends on the documents and the queue at the border. How road transport works.
Where we collect from
We collect the deceased from Bratislava, Košice, Prešov, Žilina, Nitra, Banská Bystrica and from any other Slovak town or village: from a hospital, a morgue or from another place where the deceased is. Slovakia stretches from west to east: Košice is close to the border, while from Bratislava the road runs across the whole country.
There are two road border crossings between Ukraine and Slovakia:
Ukraine
Slovakia
Malyi Bereznyi
Ubľa
Uzhhorod
Vyšné Nemecké
If it is more convenient for you, the deceased can also enter Ukraine through Poland. We choose the route that reaches your town faster.
The coffin
Under Slovak law, the deceased travels dressed, in a coffin with a label whose details match the doctor's report, so that no one can be mixed up. International transport also follows a treaty that Slovakia has signed. Our coffin is metal, hermetic and sealed, so there are no questions at either border. The options are on the Coffins page.

What can change the price
Slovakia stretches from west to east. From Košice the border is close; from Bratislava the route runs across the whole country. The coffin, the preparation of the body, the number of translations and your town in Ukraine also play a part. Tell us your town and we will work out the price straight away. Prices for other countries are on the Prices page.
Call us, day or night
Languages: Ukrainian, English, Polish, German. The same number in messengers.
If your relative is already buried in Slovakia, we arrange the exhumation and bring the remains home to Ukraine for reburial. Our exhumation costs from €500 plus the cost of transport, with no prepayment.
The way home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after the body is collected. The documents take extra time. The Slovak death certificate is issued on the spot when you apply in person at the matrika. The permit to take the body out, the translations and the embassy in Bratislava take longer. We run these in parallel.
Which border will you use?
Usually Uzhhorod (Vyšné Nemecké) or Malyi Bereznyi (Ubľa). If your town is far from Zakarpattia, we can go through Poland. We choose the faster route.
Which documents do you need from the family?
The deceased's passport or a copy, your passport and a document showing you are a relative. We collect the report of the examination of the deceased from the doctor and the death certificate from the matrika. If you do not have the passport to hand, we will tell you what to do.
Do I need to travel to Slovakia?
Usually not. We deal with the morgue and the matrika, and we submit the documents to the embassy in Bratislava ourselves. If a step needs you personally, we will tell you what and when. What can be done from home is covered in the article “If the family cannot travel abroad”.
Is embalming needed?
It depends on the condition of the body and the length of the journey; we will tell you in advance and explain why. There is also a ban: if the person had a dangerous infectious disease at the time of death, Slovak law does not allow embalming. What body preparation involves is described on a separate page.
A post mortem was done. Does that change anything?
After a post mortem, the body passport is issued by a branch of the Health Care Surveillance Authority (ÚDZS), not by the self-governing region. We apply there ourselves.
The person died in eastern Slovakia. Is it faster?
The journey itself, yes: from Košice or Michalovce it is not far to the Ubľa and Vyšné Nemecké crossings. But we still submit the documents to the embassy in Bratislava, so the paperwork takes just as long.
Which towns in Slovakia do you collect from?
From any town or village, including Bratislava, Košice, Prešov, Žilina, Nitra, Banská Bystrica, Trnava and Michalovce.
What if the body has already been cremated?
Then we bring the urn with the ashes home, from €800. A Slovak crematorium releases the urn to the funeral service, to the person arranging the funeral or to someone holding a power of attorney with an officially certified signature. At the Ukrainian border an urn needs the same documents as a coffin. How we transport an urn is on the page “Transport of an urn with ashes to Ukraine”.
