Everything starts in Vaduz, where the country's only civil registry office issues the death certificate. Liechtenstein has no Ukrainian embassy and is not party to the Strasbourg Agreement, so we file the papers with the Embassy of Ukraine in Bern. Our car leaves through Austria, then crosses Czechia, or Slovakia and Hungary.
Liechtenstein is small, and the whole country has a single civil registry office (Zivilstandsamt), in Vaduz. The Ukrainian documents, however, are prepared in Switzerland. So in Liechtenstein itself we work ourselves, and XREQUIEM manages the whole case, from the first call to handing the deceased over to the family.
First call and price
We ask which municipality in Liechtenstein your relative died in, where they are now and what you have already been given. You get the price during that same call.
Death certificate from Vaduz
Usually a doctor writes the medical certificate first, and the official one comes from the Zivilstandsamt in Vaduz.
Exit permit
Liechtenstein has its own requirements for a body leaving the country. We collect every paper the authorities in Vaduz ask for.
The package for Bern
We translate the German papers from Vaduz, have the translations certified, add the certificate of no prohibited items and lodge it all with the embassy.
Body and coffin
We prepare your relative and place them in a hermetic metal coffin that the Ukrainian border will accept.
Through Austria and home
We leave via Schaanwald towards Feldkirch, or fly part of the way from Zurich. At home we hand your relative over to the family.
The list of documents is short, but each one has to be translated into Ukrainian and certified. Otherwise Ukraine will not accept it.
What Liechtenstein issues
Ärztlicher Totenschein: the medical certificate of death. Everything else starts from it.
The official death certificate (amtlicher Totenschein): issued by the Zivilstandsamt in Vaduz.
The permit to take the body out of the country: we obtain it from the authorities in Vaduz.
What we take on
We collect the documents where the body is now: at the hospital, at the civil registry office, in the municipality.
We translate the German-language certificates into Ukrainian and certify the translations.
With your power of attorney we take the package to Bern, to the Embassy of Ukraine in Switzerland.
We put together everything Ukrainian border customs will ask for.
What we need from you
The deceased's passport, or a photo of it.
Your passport and a document showing that you are a relative.
A power of attorney for us. You can sign it in Switzerland or Liechtenstein, or from Ukraine with our help.
Switzerland and Austria rely on the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses, but Liechtenstein has not joined it. So we check the travel papers afresh every time. The general list of papers for Ukraine is on the “Documents” page.
The Embassy of Ukraine for Liechtenstein
There is no separate Ukrainian embassy in Liechtenstein. The Embassy of Ukraine in Switzerland, in Bern, also covers the country. An honorary consulate of Ukraine operates in Vaduz.
The death of a Ukrainian in Liechtenstein is registered by the consul in Bern. We bring the consul the medical and the official death certificates from Vaduz with a certified Ukrainian translation.
The consul in Bern charges nothing to register the death or to issue the first Ukrainian certificate.
Bern also gives the family a certificate for the social welfare office. With it, the funeral allowance is paid at home.
A certificate that the body and coffin hold no prohibited items is drawn up in Liechtenstein, then legalised by the embassy in Bern. Without that paper the Ukrainian border will not accept the body.
Ukraine accepts the certificate from Vaduz only with an apostille or legalisation. We lodge it ourselves, so you do not need to go to Bern. More in the article “Death certificate abroad”.
How we bring the deceased home from Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein borders Austria, and the road usually runs that way: through the Schaanwald customs post towards Feldkirch. There is no customs border with Switzerland, because Liechtenstein is part of the Swiss customs territory. Swiss customs rules therefore apply on the way out. From there we choose the route to suit your case.
Where we collect from
Liechtenstein is small, so we collect the deceased from any of its villages and towns: Vaduz, Schaan, Eschen, Balzers, Triesen or another, from a hospital or from another place where the deceased is. The road usually starts through Austria, and the route depends on that.
By road
We usually go through Austria, then through Czechia, or through Slovakia and Hungary, to the Ukrainian border. The specialist vehicle goes straight to your town, and the coffin is not reloaded on the way.
Plane plus road
The nearest large airport is in Zurich. A connecting flight ends in a country next to the Ukrainian border, and our vehicle takes over from there. We do not promise direct flights to Ukraine. The air leg takes from 2.5 hours.
How long the journey takes
The drive itself takes from 24 hours after collection. When we set off is up to Vaduz and Bern: we leave as soon as their papers are ready.
The Ukrainian border checks the body in a sealed hermetic metal coffin. For customs we write a free-form statement and hand it in with the documents. More on the pages “Road transport” and “Air transport”.
What repatriation from Liechtenstein costs
Body from Liechtensteinfrom €3,300
Urn with ashesfrom €800
The “from” price covers the whole way from Liechtenstein. We charge for a funeral in Ukraine separately.
What the price includes
The price includes:
contact with hospital and morgue
local, consular, border documents
preparing the body for travel
hermetically sealed coffin with a zinc liner for transport
sealing as the border requires
usually by car through Austria; if needed, part of the way by air from Zurich
handover to the family
Coffin of your choice and urn: free of charge.
What can change the price
For Liechtenstein, three things move the amount most: the distance from Feldkirch to your town, a flight from Zurich instead of the car, and the coffin model. It also matters whether the certificate from Vaduz is already issued. Give us these details and we will give you the exact price. Prices for other countries are on the “Prices” page.

Exhumation in Liechtenstein and Reburial in Ukraine
If your relative is already buried in Liechtenstein, we arrange the exhumation and bring the remains home to Ukraine for reburial. Our exhumation costs from €500 plus the cost of transport, with no prepayment.
How much does it cost to bring the deceased home from Liechtenstein?
From €3,300. The price covers the papers from Vaduz, submission to the embassy in Bern, preparation of the body, a hermetic coffin and the road through Austria to your town. A funeral in Ukraine is separate. Call us and we will give you the price for your case.
How long does it take?
The drive takes from 24 hours after collection, and a flight from Zurich, if we choose one, from 2.5 hours. The longest wait is usually for the documents, so we prepare the local and the Ukrainian papers at the same time.
Do I deal with Switzerland or with Liechtenstein?
With both, and we do it for you. The death certificate is issued by the civil registry office (Zivilstandsamt) in Vaduz, and the Ukrainian documents are prepared by the Embassy of Ukraine in Bern. There is also an honorary consulate of Ukraine in Vaduz.
Who issues the death certificate?
A doctor usually writes the medical certificate, and the official death certificate is issued by the Zivilstandsamt in Vaduz. For Ukraine it must be translated and certified. That is our job too.
Which documents do you need from the family?
From you we only need the deceased's passport or a photo of it, your passport, proof that you are related and a power of attorney for us. The certificates in Vaduz and the filing in Bern are on us. If you live in Switzerland or Liechtenstein, it is convenient to arrange the power of attorney there. If you are in Ukraine, we will tell you how to arrange it.
Do I need to travel?
Usually not, either to Vaduz or to Bern. We collect the deceased, obtain the certificates and submit the documents to the embassy. If an office wants your signature in person, we will warn you in advance. The article “If the family cannot travel abroad” explains what can be done from home.
What kind of coffin is needed? Is embalming compulsory?
A body may enter Ukraine only in a sealed hermetic metal coffin. The route decides on embalming: for a flight from Zurich, sometimes only an embalmed body is accepted. Preparation of the body is already in the price; if embalming is needed, we will tell you in advance. More in the “Preparing the body” section.
The deceased had insurance. What should I do?
The policy may have been taken out in Ukraine, in Liechtenstein or in Switzerland. Find it and send us a photo before you hire anyone: the insurer usually wants to agree the costs in advance, otherwise the compensation can be lost. If the policy does not cover the whole journey, we will work out the rest separately and tell you straight away.
Which places in Liechtenstein do you collect from?
From any municipality, be it Vaduz, Schaan, Eschen, Balzers, Triesen or another. Tell us the municipality and the address of the hospital or morgue, and we will agree a collection time.
Can an urn with ashes be brought home?
Yes. With the urn we send the death certificate from Vaduz and the certificate of no prohibited items, legalised by the embassy in Bern. Transporting an urn costs from €800. More on the “Urn transport” page.
