A Ukrainian died in Vietnam: who pays for transport

Most Ukrainians in Vietnam are tourists, while fewer work there. Who can pay for the journey home, that is repatriation from Vietnam, depends on this. Below are the options and what to check first.

  • Travel insurance often covers repatriation, though sometimes only to an airport or the border.
  • Foreigners with an employment contract of 12 months or more in Vietnam have compulsory social insurance, which pays a funeral allowance.

How much does transport from Vietnam cost

The price is fixed in the contract before transport begins. It depends on the city in Vietnam, the flight and layovers, the need for embalming (determined by the airline), and the city in Ukraine. The price includes documents, preparation of the body, a three-layer coffin with a zinc liner, transport, and handover to the family. A coffin of your choice and an urn are provided free of charge. Transit takes from 72 hours.

If the person was on holiday

Travel insurance usually includes body repatriation. Until the insurer gives approval, do not hire a local funeral home on your own, as you may lose coverage. A policy often pays for transport only to an airport or the border, and the family pays for the rest of the route; we will let you know this in advance. Send us a photo of the policy, and we will speak with the insurance company ourselves. Read more: insurance and body transport.

If the person worked in Vietnam

Under the Law of Vietnam on Social Insurance 2024, foreigners with an employment contract for 12 months or longer have compulsory social insurance. If the person paid contributions for at least 12 months, or died at work or from an occupational disease, the person arranging the funeral receives a funeral allowance: 10 times the so-called reference level (mức tham chiếu). From 1 July 2026, this is about 25.3 million VND.

What to do: ask the employer for the employment contract and proof of social insurance. We will advise you on which death documents are needed to claim the payment.

Funeral benefit in Ukraine

After returning home, the family can apply for a funeral benefit in Ukraine; the embassy issues a certificate for this purpose. How to do this: funeral benefit 2026.

An urn is cheaper than a body

An urn does not require a three-layer coffin or air cargo transport for a coffin. We arrange cremation only together with transporting the urn. Read more: cremation in Vietnam and urn transport.
