Summary. In Lithuania two papers come first: the hospital issues the medical certificate of death, and the local municipality registers the death. Instead of a body passport, we send a notification to the Lithuanian health authority (NVSC). The Ukrainian border documents are a separate set, and we prepare them in parallel.
One call to us is enough. After it, we speak to the hospital or morgue, the municipality, the NVSC and the consular section in Vilnius, and keep you posted on each step. We speak Ukrainian, English, Polish and German, so a Lithuanian hospital can reach us in English too.
The first conversation
Where is the deceased now: a hospital in Vilnius, a morgue in Kaunas, a smaller town? Are the police involved? From your answers we work out the price.
The medical certificate of death
Without the Lithuanian medical certificate of death (medicininis mirties liudijimas), the body cannot be accepted for processing. We check that it has already been issued.
The coffin
Before departure we prepare a hermetically sealed coffin with a zinc liner and put it under official seal, as the Ukrainian side requires.
The Lithuanian sanitary service
We notify the National Public Health Centre (NVSC) that the body is leaving for Ukraine.
The Embassy of Ukraine
In Vilnius the consul registers the death from the translated Lithuanian papers, and the embassy certifies the certificate for the border.
The road
Out of Lithuania, across Poland, and into Ukraine at the crossing nearest your town.
Home
Handover to the family in your town. If you wish, we organise the funeral as well, in any part of Ukraine.
Medicininis mirties liudijimas: the medical certificate of death. Only after it is the body accepted for processing.
The death certificate from the municipality (savivaldybė): the death is registered by the local municipality, free of charge, and a funeral director may do this for the family. The Ukrainian consul needs this certificate. We obtain it.
Mirusiojo kūno laissez-passer: the body passport that the NVSC issues for transport to countries that are parties to the Strasbourg Agreement. For Ukraine, a notification is submitted instead; we explain it below.
What we need from you
The deceased's passport or a scan of it. We take the details from it for the NVSC notification and for the translations for the embassy.
Your passport and proof of the family link: in Vilnius the consul records which relative has applied.
The name of the hospital or morgue that issued the medical certificate, or the police contact, if the police have already been in touch.
You can send scans on Viber or Telegram. We deal with the local offices, so you do not need to speak the language. The full list is on the “Documents” page.
The body passport or a notification
Lithuania is a party to the Strasbourg Agreement, and Ukraine is not. So for transport to Ukraine a separate notification is sent to the Lithuanian sanitary service (NVSC). We do this.
Lithuanian papers alone are not enough for Ukraine. At the border they check the death certificate, a hermetic metal coffin and the certificate of no prohibited items in the body and the coffin, certified by the Embassy of Ukraine. We prepare the Lithuanian and the Ukrainian sets at the same time.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Lithuania
Ukraine has only one mission in Lithuania: the Embassy in Vilnius. Its consular section is at a separate address. The section has a hotline, which takes calls only when a Ukrainian citizen's life is at risk or a Ukrainian citizen has died.
To register the death, the consul in Vilnius needs the hospital certificate and the municipality's death certificate, both translated into Ukrainian and certified. No consular fee is charged for this or for the first Ukrainian certificate.
Ask the consul for the social protection certificate as well: back home, the funeral allowance is claimed with it.
The embassy's stamp on the certificate of no prohibited items is what lets the body through the Ukrainian border.
If you have already called the consular section's hotline, that was the right step. Now call us and we will take it from there. All the first steps are on the page “What to do if a loved one dies abroad”.
How we bring the deceased home from Lithuania
Lithuania and Ukraine do not share a border, so the route always crosses Poland. Our specialist vehicle enters Ukraine at the Polish-Ukrainian crossing point nearest your town. The body reaches home from 24 hours after we collect it. More about road transport.
Where we collect from
Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys or a village: we collect from wherever the deceased is. Morgues in Lithuania are usually attached to hospitals, and the hospital charges for keeping the body, so we try to collect without delay. The drive from Klaipėda on the coast is longer than from Kaunas or Vilnius; the route and the price are worked out for your town.
A plane is also possible. We explain how it works on the page “Air transport”. From Lithuania the road is often simpler: the deceased is not reloaded, and you know where they are at every stage of the journey.
The coffin
Ukrainian customs accept the body only in a hermetically sealed coffin with a zinc liner, under official seal, together with the embassy-certified certificate of no prohibited items. We pick a coffin that passes the border the first time. The options are on the page “Coffins and sealed zinc liners”.
Embalming
After a sudden or unexpected death in Lithuania, the police draw up a report, and an autopsy is normally carried out. Whether embalming is needed after that depends on the condition of the body, the road ahead and the carrier's rules. We tell you before we start.
Price of repatriation from Lithuania
Body from Lithuaniafrom €1,300
Urn with ashesfrom €800
This covers the whole road from the Lithuanian morgue to your town, Polish transit included. A funeral in Ukraine is charged on its own.
What the price includes
The price includes:
contact with hospital and morgue
local, consular, border documents
preparing the body for travel
hermetically sealed coffin with a zinc liner for transport
sealing as the border requires
usually by road; if needed, part of the way by air
handover to the family
Coffin of your choice and urn: free of charge.
What the exact price depends on
It depends on the city in Lithuania (from Klaipėda the road is longer than from Kaunas or Vilnius), on the town in Ukraine, on the coffin and the preparation of the body, and on the number of translations. Tell us both cities and we will work out the price straight away. Other countries are on the Prices page.
Call us, day or night
Languages: Ukrainian, English, Polish, German. The same number in messengers.
If your relative is already buried in Lithuania, we arrange the exhumation and bring the remains home to Ukraine for reburial. Our exhumation costs from €500 plus the cost of transport, with no prepayment.
The way home to Ukraine takes from 24 hours after the body is collected. How long the paperwork takes depends on the day of the week, public holidays and the translations for the embassy in Vilnius. We prepare the NVSC notification and the documents for the consul in parallel, not one after the other.
Is a body passport (laissez-passer) needed for Ukraine?
No. Lithuania is a party to the Strasbourg Agreement and Ukraine is not, so instead of the body passport a separate notification is sent to the Lithuanian sanitary service. We do this. The Ukrainian documents for the border are still needed.
Which documents do you need from the family?
From you: the deceased's passport (a scan will do), your passport and proof that you are a relative. The rest comes from Lithuania: the hospital certificate and the municipality's death certificate. We translate them into Ukrainian and have them certified for the consul.
Do I need to travel to Lithuania?
In most cases, no. We submit the notification to the NVSC. We also take the documents to the consular section in Vilnius. If the embassy asks for a relative's signature, we will explain the simplest way to give it. What you can do from home is described in the article “If the family cannot travel abroad”.
Why not by plane?
It can be done by plane, but from Lithuania a road journey through Poland is often simpler: there is less reloading and fewer approvals. We will compare both options for you. About the plane, see the page “Air transport”.
Should I call the embassy's hotline?
Yes, that is the right step. After that, call us: we will take over the transport and the documents.
Which cities in Lithuania do you collect from?
From any: Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys, Alytus, Marijampolė and smaller towns and villages.
What should I do first?
Call us and find the insurance policy, if there is one: an insurer may want to appoint the funeral director itself. The first steps are at the top of this page and on “What to do if a loved one dies abroad”. Do not pay anyone until you know the full price to bring the deceased home.
Can you bring home an urn with ashes?
Yes, from €800. Cremation is common in Lithuania, and at the Ukrainian border an urn needs the same documents as a coffin. Details are on the page “Transport of an urn with ashes to Ukraine”.
