Documents and translations

We help collect, translate and apostille the documents needed to bring a loved one home to Romania, and to register the death in the Republic of Romania.

What we arrange

The list of documents for your country of death and for the Romanian side, help with obtaining the certificates, translations into Romanian (the state language of Romania), and an apostille or legalisation where needed.

The application for the mortuary passport (laissez-passer) where it applies, and the documents for the Romanian consulate.

How it works

The death is first registered in the country where it occurred. That death certificate can then be transcribed at an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Romania; if it is not, a Romanian certificate is issued in Romania on the basis of the legalised foreign one.

Moldova has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since 2007, so documents from other member countries are confirmed with an apostille. Documents from Romania are valid in Romania without legalisation under a bilateral treaty.

Frequently asked questions

Into which language must the documents be translated?

Into Romanian, the state language of Romania. We tell you which documents need a translation and in what form.

What is an apostille?

An apostille is a certificate that confirms a public document for use in another country that applies the Hague Convention. Moldova has applied the Convention since 2007.

Must the death also be registered in Romania?

As a rule, yes: the foreign death record is transcribed into the Romanian civil register, at a consulate or later in Romania. According to the Public Services Agency (ASP, 2024), the transcription must be declared within 6 months of returning to Romania or receiving the document.
