Repatriation from Slovenia to Romania

If someone close to you has died in Slovenia, we help bring them home to the Republic of Romania, with the Slovenian and Romanian documents and the journey arranged.

Issuing authority and document
Slovenia and the Republic of Romania are both parties to the Strasbourg Agreement. According to Slovenia's declaration, the competent authority is the Health Inspectorate of the Republic of Slovenia (Zdravstveni inšpektorat) in Ljubljana. Moldova has no mission in Slovenia: the country is covered by the Embassy of the Republic of Romania in Budapest.
Transport
By air or by road. The mode of transport and the handover point in Romania are agreed with the family case by case, depending on the documents, the route and the transport available.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Romanian consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
Price
Body (repatriation of remains): from 1 500 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

Both countries are parties to the Strasbourg Agreement (1973), so the body travels with a laissez-passer issued in Slovenia. The document is drawn up in Slovenian and in one of the official languages of the Council of Europe. The authority issues it once satisfied that the medical, health and administrative requirements are met and that the coffin complies with the agreement.

Under the agreement, the destination and transit countries may not require any documents other than the laissez-passer and the usual transport documents. The coffin must be impervious and lined with absorbent material, for example an outer wooden coffin with a soldered zinc inner coffin, or a wooden coffin lined with zinc.

Required documents

Usually needed: the Slovenian death certificate, the passport or identity document of the deceased, the applicant's documents and the funeral service's papers. For registering the death in Romania, extracts may be needed, with an apostille if required (Slovenia and Moldova both apply the Hague Convention). We confirm the exact list for your case.

Specifics of Slovenia

Moldova has no embassy in Slovenia; consular questions go to the embassy in Budapest, and we help prepare them. The Strasbourg Agreement does not apply to the transport of ashes, so for an urn we set out the list of documents separately.
