Your loved one has passed away in Canada, and the family chooses cremation rather than repatriation from Canada. Cremation in Canada is possible for anyone, but there is no single rule for the whole country: funeral services are regulated by each province. Below are two examples, Ontario and British Columbia, as well as how to bring an urn with ashes to Ukraine.
In 30 seconds.
“You were always available, whatever the time…” — Віта Х. “Everything was organised with great dignity, professionally and with attention to every detail.” — Тамара Ю. “Every question was resolved promptly, with respect and attention to detail.” — Olha B. “…your support, compassion, sense of responsibility and professionalism meant a great deal to us.” — Ірина Б. “It all went quickly and professionally…” — Оля К. The decision is made by the deceased's legal representative. Usually, this is the estate trustee (executor of the will). If there is no will, the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO, the funeral sector regulator) provides a non-exhaustive list of who may act as a representative: a court-appointed executor or administrator; spouse; adult children; parents. The funeral home may ask for an ID and proof of your authority.
The order of priority is directly written in the Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Act (section 5). The right to control the disposition of remains belongs, in order, to: the personal representative named in the will, spouse, adult child, adult grandchild, parents, sibling, and so on. If a person of higher priority is unavailable or refuses, the right passes to the next. Among people of equal priority, such as several children, an agreement decides, or without one, the eldest. Without written authorization from this person, a funeral provider cannot perform a cremation (section 8).
You do not have to travel to Canada. We arrange cremation through local partners: you sign the consent and power of attorney, and our partners work with the funeral home and crematorium. If the cremation has already taken place, we collect the ready urn from the funeral home or the family.
A doctor, nurse practitioner, or coroner signs the Medical Certification of Death within 48 hours of death. The funeral director registers the death with the Vital Statistics Agency and issues the death certificate and disposition permit. The crematorium operates only with this permit and the written consent of the person who has the right to control the disposition of remains.
In British Columbia, a crematorium cannot cremate human remains within 48 hours after death, unless ordered by a medical health officer. After that, the cremation must be carried out as soon as practicable.
In Ontario, we did not find a minimum waiting period in official sources. The timing depends on death registration and the coroner's certificate. Some crematoriums charge an extra fee for rush cremation and weekend service. Usually, several days pass between death and cremation, but only the crematorium can confirm the exact timeframe.
Prices in Canada are set by the crematoriums themselves. The Ontario regulator requires them to have a price list and advises comparing offers. Example: Highland Park Crematorium (Peterborough, Ontario), price list effective October 1, 2026:
| Service | Price before tax | With HST |
|---|---|---|
| Adult cremation | 660 CAD | 745.80 CAD |
| BAO Consumer Protection Fee | 30 CAD | 30 CAD |
| Weekend or holiday cremation | 350 CAD | 395.50 CAD |
| Refundable deposit for cremated remains | 350 CAD | 350 CAD |

Funeral home services are paid separately: body transfer, container or casket, paperwork, coroner's certificate. Other provinces and crematoriums have their own prices.
If we arrange the cremation, we calculate the cost for your specific situation. Transporting an urn with ashes to Ukraine costs from 800 €. There is no prepayment: payment is made after the urn is handed over under the contract.
The ashes are placed in a small box or urn with a metal tag bearing identification details. You can bring your own urn, but its type and size must be checked against the crematorium's rules.
For flights from Canada, there are clear rules from the airport security authority CATSA:
Some airlines do not accept ashes in checked baggage, so we check the carrier's rules before buying a ticket.
Usually, the following documents travel with the urn:
The Ontario regulator reminds families that when taking ashes out of the province, you must follow the rules of the destination country. For Ukraine, Canadian documents are authenticated with an apostille. It is issued by Global Affairs Canada, or by a designated provincial authority for certain documents. We handle the Ukrainian translation. The Embassy of Ukraine operates in Ottawa, and there are also consulates general. We provide a complete list of documents to every family.
The urn is transported by plane in the cabin, in checked baggage, or as air cargo. At the Ukrainian border, the urn goes through separate clearance; see details in the article on customs clearance for an urn. To see how we work, read our urn transport page.
Yes. The family can collect the urn and bring it themselves.
The main risk in Canada is at airport security screening. A standard urn with an adult's ashes is larger than 350 ml. If the X-ray cannot see the contents, the urn will not be allowed into the cabin. Then you will have to leave it with someone at the airport, check it as baggage if the airline allows, or send it by mail or cargo. At the Ukrainian border, officials may ask for an apostille and translation.
Entrust the transport to us if there is a large volume of ashes, if no one from the family can fly to Canada, or if the documents are not ready yet.

If the family wants a traditional burial in a coffin, read about body repatriation from Canada.
In Ukraine, an urn is buried in a grave, interred in an existing family grave, or placed in a columbarium. Cemetery approval is required, and for a family grave, documents proving ownership of the plot. Details: urn burial. Make arrangements with the cemetery while the urn is still in Canada.
